General Description:

The Locksmith performs journey-level commercial locksmith work related to the repair, installation, and servicing of locks and related hardware at the Main Campus, Regional Centers and other College facilities. This includes, but is not limited to: installing, repairing, rebuilding and troubleshooting mechanical, motorized and electronic locking devices, as well as establishing and/or maintaining the College wide keying system.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Install, adjust and service locks, doors and door closers including automatic electric doors, panic hardware, doors, entrances, lockers and magnetic keying systems and related security and electronic access equipment/systems to ensure safety of facilities.

  • Disassemble locks such as padlocks, safe locks, door locking devices to repair worn parts including tumblers and springs. Re-key cylinders complying with the existing systems. Open locking mechanisms via pick tool, drilling and repair mechanisms.

  • Inspect the work of third party contractors within areas of responsibility; reviewing assigned locksmith jobs for compliance with state, local, and federal laws; and inspect finished jobs to confirm compliance. Provide report of findings to supervisor.

  • Review and recommend security and safety measures and research associated costs.

  • Design, implement and maintain preventative maintenance program.

  • Research supplies and prepare purchase order requests to maintain inventory of routine repair items, equipment parts, chemicals and other necessary supplies.

  • Cut new and duplicate keys using computer driven equipment.

  • Install door hardware and frames including hinges, closures, security devices, locksets, etc.

  • Maintain inventory of door hardware parts, supplies and blanks.

  • Create, implement and maintain master key systems and computer database for Main Campus and all Regional Centers.

  • Service and maintain safes.

  • Clean, maintain, adjust, calibrate and service equipment used in the performance of duties.

  • Assist in the writing of specifications for repairs and new construction.

  • Maintain appropriate service and repair records.

  • May train and direct the work of other staff which may be assigned to the lock shop.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required.

• At least five (5) years of direct work experience as a professional locksmith required.

• A valid driver’s license is required.

• Must be available to work nights and weekends as needed.

• Ability to work under variable weather conditions, climb ladders, and use mechanical lifts at all heights is required.

• Ability to perform activities such as lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs unassisted) bending, standing for prolonged periods of time, and climbing ladders is required.

• Must be able to handle hazardous materials safely and tolerate exposure to electrical and other environmental hazards.

• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers.

• Must possess basic math skills, including the ability to calculate using ratios, fractions and percentages.

• Ability to understand complex manuals and work from plans, drawings and blueprints as appropriate to the trade.

• Effective verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to multi-task and perform a number of related job functions simultaneously, accurately and timely.

• Ability to maintain sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• CPL certification from Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) and/or CJIL from Institutional Locksmiths Association (ILA) preferred.

• Previous experience working as a locksmith within an educational environment is preferred.

• Experience in metal fabrication (welding) preferred.
