DESCRIPTION

The WSU Extension King County 4-H Assistant Professor is a full-time, 12-month, career-track faculty position with the WSU Extension 4-H Youth Development Program and will serve as the County Director. The position is headquartered at the WSU King County Extension office in Renton, Washington.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The WSU Extension 4-H Youth Development Program is seeking a dynamic, inspired, and highly qualified professional to provide leadership to a multi-disciplinary team of King County Extension educators in the role of WSU King County Extension Director. King County is named after Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most influential civil rights leaders in our nation's history, King County is a vibrant community with residents that represent countries from around the world. It is a region with increasing diversity that cherishes the artistic and social traditions of many cultures. In addition to serving as County Director, this person will plan, lead, and support efforts related to 4-H youth development science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The faculty position will function as an integral part of the WSU Extension 4-H Youth Development team and the Youth and Families Program Unit.

RESPONSIBILITIES
As Extension County Director, engage with county government for planning and advisory purposes. Provide leadership for personnel and operations related to fiscal and budget management and civil rights compliance. Manage the King County Extension office.
Provide leadership for the 4-H King County program, specifically supporting King County STEM programming.
Build and maintain cooperative, respectful, trusted, and collaborative working relationships with county, regional, and statewide Extension faculty and staff; community, county, state, national, and tribal partners; other youth-serving programs, governmental agencies, and stakeholders to provide programs that are aligned with programmatic needs.
Develop, deliver, and oversee research and outcomes based innovative programming and evaluation leading to peer-reviewed scholarship such as refereed journal articles, Extension publications, presentations, and other products for promotion advancement.
Conduct community needs assessment, program development and participant recruitment efforts that include the engagement of Washington’s diverse residents across race, gender, and socioeconomic class, disability, and other differences.
Acquire and manage external grants, contracts, fee-for-service, and gifts to support the expansion, development, and delivery of educational programs.
Participate in and provide effective and appropriate levels of service as a faculty member of Washington State University College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences; Extension; the 4-H Youth Development program, and the Youth and Families Program Unit.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Earned Master’s degree in youth development, or other related field with demonstrated knowledge in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) by date of hire.
  • Two years of experience focused in developing, delivering, and managing STEM education programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using Zoom and/or Teams technology and through both written and verbal communication, when relating to a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills.
  • While using a private or WSU motor pool vehicle for official business, have current automobile liability insurance (meeting the requirements described in RCW46.30.020 and RCW 46.29.090) and possess a valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated record of scholarship in subject matter and program aligned with this position.
  • Demonstrated resource acquisition skills in grants, gift development, and revenue generation.
  • Experience managing grants and contracts including planning, assigning, and supervising the work of staff, budget reconciliation, financial planning, and reporting.
  • Experience in evaluation of the effectiveness of program delivery and behavior change.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver educational programs using a variety of current technologies.
  • Ph.D. in youth development or closely related field.
  • Proven ability to work in multi-disciplinary, collaborative programming.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency skills and a commitment to expanding and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as social justice issues.
  • Strong, interpersonal skills and a capacity and willingness to engage diverse constituents from varying socioeconomic and ethnic groups in education programs.

JOB EXPECTATIONS

  • Reliable transportation for year-round travel is required. Mileage will be reimbursed for work- related travel at the approved state rate.
  • This position works as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of Extension educators and support staff in county Extension offices as well as department-based Extension specialists and researchers.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends.
  • Extension faculty members are hired into the organization, not into a specific geographical location. It is possible that future circumstances may require relocation.
  • Understand and carry out the principles and specific requirements of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Affirmative Action Plan, and all pertinent rules and regulations.

This position is located at the WSU King County Extension Office in Renton, WA. Renton is the 8th largest city in Washington State and home to approximately 100,000 residents. Located in King County and 11 miles south of downtown Seattle, Renton is a 24 square mile community at the south end of Lake Washington. Renton has thriving technology and aviation industries and is close to major airports and freeways. The city has over 2,800 acres of parks and playgrounds and is within a few hours of Mt. Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
