Job Purpose:

This position assists with the daily operations and functions of the department’s Student Services programs. Assists in collaboration with departmental and campus resources to carry out vital developmental programming for all student-athletes. Monitoring and record-keeping, as assigned. This position will develop and maintain strong communication with their supervisor, peers, internal and external constituents, coaches, administrators, student-athletes and the Faculty Athletics Representative.

Function Details:

  • Assists with the organization and implementation of additional life skills personal development programming for student-athlete “life after sport”, including, but not limited to, career and professional development, networking, and personal finance.

  • Assist prospective student-athletes during recruitment, meet with prospects and/or families during campus visits; provide information on life skills resources.

  • Organize, implement, and assess departmental community building activities and annual event(s) honor student-athlete experience.

Oversight of Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Leadership

Function Details:

  • Provide leadership to and oversight of Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
  • Manage and attend bi-monthly SAAC meetings, including assisting the SAAC officers with developing the agenda for SAAC meetings.
  • Organize, implement, and assist SAAC officers with SAAC events.
  • Provide guidance and assist with SAAC strategic initiatives.
  • Liaison from SAAC to athletic administration and responsible for providing opportunities for regular interaction with SAAC and administrators.
  • Liaison to West Coast Conference for SAAC related matters.
  • Co-instruct the student-athlete Leadership Institute.

Student-Athlete Orientation Programming

Function Details:

  • Assists with preparing and conducting the freshmen and transfer orientation programming for all incoming student-athletes to ensure acclimation to the University (e.g. EDPE 195, Summer Program, transfers).
  • Assists with orientation programming for incoming student-athlete parents and guardians.
  • Perform annual assessment of orientation programs and recommend appropriate enhancements to department administration.

  • Managing student-athlete development programs – PRIDE.
  • Maintaining appropriate records, and working with appropriate collegiate and university liaisons
  • Co-instruct orientation programming for incoming student-athletes (e.g. EDPE 195, transfers)
  • Assist with Community outreach events.

Function Details:

  • Employees of Gonzaga University’s Athletic Department must comply with all NCAA rules and regulations and acknowledge this compliance as part of an evaluation process.

Other Functions:

  • Assist other members of the Athletic department during peak periods and with special workload projects.
  • May need to transport student-athletes
  • Incumbent may represent the department on University-wide committees or projects as assigned and approved by the supervisor.

Degree Required:

Bachelor's Degree

Certifications and/or Licensures required:

Valid driver’s license

Knowledge Required:

Early career, knowledge may be from education and/or some experience

Years Experience Required:

1-2.99 years

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and work effectively with a diverse group of student-athletes and to work effectively with a large diverse staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization and problem-solving skills and an ability to communicate with numerous University constituencies in an effective manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with a high level of confidentiality and discretion.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree
  • 3-5 years progressive professional work experience (life skills programming)
  • Specialist knowledge or experience with NCAA Student-Athlete Development programming, creation, assessment including NCAA grants and training opportunities
  • Supervisory experience of Life Skills Full-time staff and graduate intern
  • Experience leading development, creation, and assessment for programing:
    • incoming student-athletes and parents
    • annual event(s) honoring student-athlete experience
    • community-building events
    • personal development
  • Experience with developing programming and curriculum for Leadership Institute
  • Experience managing career development programing and preparation

Physical / Environmental Qualifications :

  • Weekend and evening work is required
  • Work is discharged in an office environment as well as an event environment
  • Remain in stationary position 50% of the time
  • Wrist and hand movement related to computer work
  • Ability to be mobile campus/community wide for appropriate business needs
