Position Information: Description

This position will provide laboratory-specific assistance required for the function and maintenance of the Combs' laboratory.  Such assistance includes, ordering, animal colony management, maintenance of supplies/protocols/regulatory approvals, and general and technical support in biomedical research.

Duties & Responsibilities

General and technical support for a biomedical research laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Sciences

  • Make laboratory solutions and keep them stocked and/or filled
  • Maintain laboratory space, labware, and equipment; monitor laboratory supplies and order when needed
  • Subbing and labelling histological slides
  • Autoclave reagents, supplies, and biohazardous wastes
  • Perform biochemical assays, such as polymerase chain reaction, electrophoresis, western blot, ELISA
  • Manage and record laboratory safety issues and animal use
  • Train new undergraduate and graduate students
  • Document protocols and data for research activities
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation
  • Support laboratory personnel as needed
  • Maintain up-to-date digital lab protocols
  • Inventory and maintain lab frozen cell culture stocks
  • Maintain lab purchasing records, lab equipment inventory and surplus; purchase lab supplies
  • Maintain and repair lab equipment
  • Keep detailed equipment logs
  • Obtain vendor quotes when necessary 
  • 24-hour on call freezer alarm access
  • Coordinate and archive lab meetings
  • Coordinate all shipments in and out of the lab; coordinate lab waste disposal
  • Keep IT-related updates current in the lab
  • Safely maintain all lab chemicals 
  • Monitor liquid nitrogen, CO2
  • Manage tissue culture facility

Animal Experiments

  • Rodent experimental procedures such as behavior tests, administration of treatments via injections and oral gavage, tissue, blood, saliva and stool sample collections, animal/tissue collections, and survival/non-survival mouse surgeries will be expected.

Histology

  • Fixing and embedding tissue
  • Cryostat and microtome sectioning of tissue
Required Competencies
  • Willingness and ability to work with mice and people
  • Ability to listen and follow instructions
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks
  • Ability to communicate at a professional level in both verbal and written English
  • Understand and adhere to scientific ethics, lab safety procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the lab
  • Detail oriented and diligent in record keeping
  • Training on other necessary software, such as Zoom, Adobe Photoshop and GraphPad (as statistics software), will be provided
  • Algebra level or above math skills
Minimum Requirements
  • Associate's degree in the field of biological sciences or equivalent
  • Experience using Windows platform (Windows 10 or later)
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications, at least MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Outlook
  • Experience calculating molarity and dilutions in metric system
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience, immunology, medical laboratory science, biochemistry, or biology
Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$35,000 +/ year, full-time, benefitted, non-exempt

Work Schedule

8:00am - 4:30pm

40 hours per week
