Job Description:

Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant (SL-3)

Salary: $72,500

The Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention (I-GMAP) at Binghamton University, the State University of New York, announces a search for the position of Assistant Director for Operations. This is a new leadership position at an innovative, distinctive and dynamic university-based institute working at the frontier between academic research and teaching, and a global community of atrocity prevention practitioners encompassing partners in state, civil society, and international organizations. I-GMAP is poised for significant growth, including both expansion of existing programs and a number of new initiatives. The Assistant Director for Operations will play a key role in guiding the Institute through this process of expansion.

The Assistant Director for Operations (ADO) will take a leadership role for administering the full range of I-GMAP's non-academic programs:

  • In coordination with the two Co-Directors, the ADO oversees the Institute's budget and finances, including planning.
  • The ADO takes a leadership role in researching, preparing and assessing foundation grants, and in consultation with the Co-Directors oversees the Institute's development efforts including donor relations.
  • The ADO supervises the logistics surrounding the Institute's many short-term and long-term visitors, including the Charles E. Scheidt Resident Practitioners.
  • The ADO leads the Institute's planning, hosting, and assessment of a range of special events, including the annual Frontiers of Prevention forum, regular Atrocity Response Simulation exercises, and webinars.
  • The ADO has a leadership role in supervising the full range of Institute publications, including regular newsletters, policy briefs, and the annual report.
  • The ADO oversees the Institute's online presence including website and media platforms.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director for Educational Programs, the ADO contributes as needed to the supervision of the Charles E. Scheidt Faculty Fellows Program and the Mechanisms of Atrocity Prevention research program.

The position of Assistant Director for Operations is a full-time, twelve-month staff position. The ADO is expected to participate actively in the full range of I-GMAP's many events and activities, including those that periodically may fall on evenings and weekends. The position may require occasional travel, including international travel.

I-GMAP is an organization of Binghamton University, the State University of New York. The Assistant Director for Operations is an employee of Binghamton University and the State of New York. The position carries a competitive package of salary and benefits including medical, dental, prescription and vision coverage and pension via the United University Professions (UUP).

Requirements:

I-GMAP seeks a highly professional team player with the capacity to assume leadership responsibilities in a small and very busy Institute. The successful candidate will be able to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues, including the two Co-Directors, the Assistant Director for Educational Programs, and the Institute Office Manager; to interact regularly with international guests, graduate and undergraduate students, and faculty and staff members from departments and units across the university. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated skill in administration, collaborative problem-solving, and a willingness and ability to assume initiative for ongoing and future Institute projects are necessary.

The successful candidate must have strong computer skills, including demonstrated capacity for managing a range of social media platforms, a keen attention to detail in all written work, and excellent time management.

The successful applicant for the ADO position will possess a post-graduate degree in any field. While the position does not require postgraduate training specifically in the area of genocide and mass atrocity prevention, the successful candidate will be prepared to discuss how their post-graduate training may connect in creative ways with genocide and mass atrocity prevention, conceived very broadly as encompassing structural factors that constitute recognized risk factors, as well as political, cultural, and other approaches that post-atrocity societies may adopt to address the legacies of atrocity violence.

The successful applicant must be capable of representing the Institute and its work to domestic and international partners, including academic, governmental, and civil society-based institutions large and small. For this reason, we seek applicants with a genuine thirst for learning more about the range of global atrocity prevention actors and approaches, and an eagerness to interact productively with a wide diversity of institutions and individuals, in particular those based in the Global South.

Preferred:

The successful applicant should have some substantial support and/or administrative experience working in an agency or organization, whether academic or non-academic, where collaborative work and problem-solving have been central. In addition, some familiarity or background in the global landscape of contemporary genocide and mass atrocity prevention is highly desirable. Other documented skills, such as proficiency in quantitative social research methods and/or a relevant language or languages, are highly desirable.

Additional Information:

Offers of employment may be contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check and verification of degree(s) and credentials.

Working at Binghamton University

Message on working at Binghamton University from President Harvey Stenger

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DMKyZ37krc&feature=youtu.be

History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.

Mission Statement

Binghamton University is a premier public university dedicated to enriching the lives of people in the region, state, nation and world through discovery and education and to being enriched by partnerships with those communities.

Vision Statement

Binghamton as an institution is dedicated to higher education, one that combines an international reputation for graduate education, research, scholarship and creative endeavor with the best undergraduate programs available at any public university.

We are an academically selective community that shares ideas across departments, disciplines and borders. We encourage faculty, students and staff to ask unexpected questions, foster open dialog and develop innovative solutions to important problems.
