The UCLA/Getty Interdepartmental Program in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications for lecturer positions to teach the following courses during the Fall quarter, 2022. The quarter begins on September 19 and ends on December 9. These appointments also provides opportunities for interaction with colleagues, laboratory facilities and research infrastructure at UCLA and the Getty Villa. Through its collaboration with the Getty Conservation Institute, as a unit in the UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, and located in the UCLA Fowler Museum, the Conservation Program is part of a vibrant center of archaeological and cultural scholarship.

CLT HTG 260 Structure, Properties and Deterioration of Material: Ceramics, Glass, Glazes
General introduction to different types of ancient ceramic and glass materials. Relationship between composition (chemistry), structure (crystals, molecular arrangement, and microstructure), and properties of ceramics, glass, glazes. Nature of frit and faience deterioration explained using basic concepts from physics and chemistry. Chemical, optical, and structural properties. Deterioration phenomena, defects, and products of alteration of ceramics and vitreous artifacts. Hands-on examination of variety of samples and artifacts.

CLT HTG 230 Conservation Laboratory: Ceramics, Glass and Glazes

Enforced requisite: course 260. Recommended: course M215. Hands-on study in deterioration and conservation of ceramics and glass. Evaluation of use of conservation materials in joining, gap-filling, and restoration of ceramics and experience in their use provided.

Appointments will be at the lecturer level and will be located in Los Angeles unless we are required to teach them remotely. Duties include preparation and delivery of lectures and laboratory practical sessions and supervision of conservation treatments related to the course taught.

Candidates should hold a graduate degree in conservation from a recognized academic institution, with at least five years of experience in the conservation of archaeological and ethnographic materials. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous academic teaching experience both in delivering theoretical lectures and seminars and developing and supervising object treatments in the laboratory.
