THE OPPORTUNITY

Under the supervision of the Writing Center director and the Writing Program director, the Writing Center Instructor and Tutoring Specialist collaborates in the oversight and direction of the WSU Undergraduate Writing Center and its various initiatives. This position contributes to our mission of providing all WSU students with equitable and inclusive access to writing support through one-with-one consultations, workshops, faculty collaborations, and credit-bearing writing-support courses. The Writing Center Instructor and Tutoring Specialist collaborates with the Writing Program leadership to ensure consistency and efficacy of the established tutoring and teaching endeavors and contributes to innovative and expansive initiatives aimed at supporting WSU student-writers.

In the day-to-day sense, the Writing Center Instructor and Tutoring Specialist will collaborate with WP leadership around many efforts: training, mentoring, and supervising the undergraduate writing tutors; developing and maintaining tutor, writer, and faculty resources related to writing and revision; developing and hosting Writing Center initiatives such as group-specific writing workshops and peer-review events; training and mentoring writing tutors to participate in those events; teaching and developing curricula for the WRIT prefix writing courses; supervising and mentoring tutors to co-instruct (or TA) writing classes in the WRIT prefix; and collaborating with the Writing Program leadership around faculty-development, student-support, writing assessment, and writing-intensive curricular efforts.

The Writing Center is housed within the WSU Writing Program, a member of DAESA (Division of Academic Engagement and Student Achievement) within the office of the Provost. The Writing Program is not associated with any one department or college and is committed to collaborating with faculty and staff across the university to foster, support, and enrich writing curricula in all disciplines.

RESPONSIBILITIES

A successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to participate in the mentoring and supervising of undergraduate writing tutors in the Writing Center. Duties might include:

  • Providing ongoing mentoring to the undergraduate writing tutors around pedagogies and practices of writing tutoring

  • Conducting formal and informal observation and evaluation of consultants and offering in-the-moment educational guidance or support in the on-campus Writing Center and online consultations

  • Developing and sustaining positive, professional relationships with the undergraduate tutors

A successful candidate will demonstrate abilities related to teaching and training Writing Center tutors and designing and implementing writing support classes for the WSU student population. Duties might include:

  • Collaborating with WC Director to offer regular professional development opportunities for the Writing Center tutors such as weekly online training activities and program development committees

  • Collaborate in planning and leading Writing Center tutor training events and meetings

  • Collaborate in teaching and training writing tutors to offer workshops, host peer review events, and visit university classes

  • Designing and leading classroom visits and/or workshops as requested by university faculty or the WP leadership

  • Teaching or co-teaching any of the 1-credit writing courses offered under the WRIT prefix

  • Collaborating with WP leadership in developing and expanding the WRIT course offerings

A successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to oversee an array of administrative aspects of the Writing Center. Duties might include:

  • Participate in recruiting and hiring new Writing Center tutors

  • Participate in the day-to-day supervision of the Writing Center including, but not limited to, managing the WConline appointment schedule, monitoring staff schedules and sub requests, troubleshooting during open hours, and welcoming incoming appointments and walk-ins

  • Managing correspondence through the Writing Center email address regarding student requests, faculty or advisor inquiries, instructor requests, etc.

  • Overseeing the WRIT course schedules in the university catalog and enrollment platform

  • Overseeing enrollment, section swaps, grading, and other logistics throughout the WRIT courses

  • Developing and maintaining physical and digital resources for consultants, writers, and faculty

  • Collaborating with the Writing Program leadership around the online presence of the Writing Center

A successful candidate will demonstrate capacity to engage in the professional components of a scholarly and administrative role in higher ed. These components include:

  • Collaborating in program assessment initiatives and related strategies for improvement in the UWC and GWC

  • Participating in local, state-wide, and national conversations about writing centers through the Pacific Northwest Writing Centers Association and/or the International Writing Centers Association

  • Staying up to date on current writing center scholarship and translate theory and research in the field into the UWC and GWC

  • Maintaining the day-to-day functions and practices in alignment with the vision and mission of the Writing Center and the Writing Program

  • Joining the WP’s assessment team for the University Writing Portfolio

  • Collaborating with WP leadership in faculty development and WAC/WID initiatives

  • Working effectively and companionably with the WP staff.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree in any discipline

  • One year of experience in any form of academic support

  • Teaching or tutoring experience at any level

  • Supervisory experience with young adults or college-level employees

  • Experience working with diverse populations in education

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working in a Writing Center, Learning Commons, or tutoring program

  • Experience teaching in higher education

  • Demonstrated knowledge of writing center theories and practice

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
