In support of the increased number of admitted students in the School of Engineering, Stanford Career Education (aka BEAM) seeks talented and committed professionals to serve as the Assistant Director of Career Communities, Engineering and Earth, which is located in the Career Communities area of our center.

As a whole our center connects undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. students to the communities, people, career education resources, and opportunities that strengthen their abilities to define and pursue purposeful careers and meaningful work.

Within Stanford Career Education, Career Communities includes a team of career coaches who engage purposefully with the School of Engineering and the School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences. The Career Communities area provides students formative touch points with Stanford Career Education. Our center seeks an Assistant Director who is committed to the success and affiliation with undergraduate and master's Engineering and Earth students, who brings to their work core qualities such as creativity, strategic thinking, knowledge of career and student development, is inclusive, is able to foster belonging and to uplift diversity and equity through intention-driven programs and services. The Career Communities team works to engage students in their path toward meaningful work that is best defined by the student. The Assistant Director of Career Communities, Engineering and Earth is responsible for developing programs, events, and resources for undergraduate and master's Engineering and Earth students, as well as providing coaching via individual and group settings for all undergraduate and master's students majoring in Engineering or Earth degrees. These sessions may include delivery via in-person and/or virtual environments.

In this role, you will work in collaboration with the Associate Director of Engineering and Earth on a range of responsibilities, including those outlined below:

Inclusive Program Development, Outreach, Communication, and Efficacy
  • Develop and deliver a variety of inclusive programs and events for the Engineering and Earth undergraduate and master's population, including innovative programs that focus on finding meaningful work, upskilling, building professional connections, integrative learning, and career exploration.
  • Partner with departments and colleagues across campus and in the Engineering and Earth community, to provide programming, events, and resources for students; collaborate on career courses such as Wellness 122: the Intersection of Career and Wellbeing.
  • Build awareness of Stanford Career Education to undergraduate and master's Engineering and Earth students through a range of creative communications and media.
  • Manage outreach programs and relationships with external community and university liaisons, as well as to the outcomes reporting that demonstrates the efficacy of these programs.
  • Develop researched and relevant content (i.e., seminars, workshops, presentations, webinars) to increase student engagement and help to support programming efficacy including scalability, responsiveness to student needs, and alignment with department and campus partners.


Career Coaching
  • Integrate into coaching of undergraduate and master's Engineering and Earth students, student development models, student lifecycle development models, coaching models and career path/development research and practice.
  • Coach students on career education topics including resumes and cover letters, job search strategies, networking, career exploration, assessments and the intersection of career and identity.
  • Develop and deliver group appointments to build and foster community among students and partners.


Strategic Planning, Key Initiatives, Thought Leadership
  • Make strategic recommendations for future programs by utilizing data, student trends/feedback, and economic changes.
  • Collaborate on department-wide initiatives or large-scale programs, in areas such as diversity and inclusion, integrative learning, well-being and belonging.
  • Develop thought leadership, especially in relation to the affiliation and success of undergraduate and master's Engineering and Earth students and contribute to team expertise through professional development.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Advanced communication skills to communicate information clearly and effectively to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of students, alumni and management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to review and analyze complex information.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Multicultural awareness and competence; ability to work in a diverse environment and serve constituents from a wide variety of backgrounds.


In addition, preferred requirements include:
  • Master's degree in Education, Business, or related field.
  • Entrepreneurial, creative, and innovative spirit.
  • Comfort with trying new approaches, change, ambiguity, and risk.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience and comfort with technology, social media, and digital communication.
  • Knowledge of trends in career development, economy, effective interventions, technology, and higher education networks.
  • Knowledge of career interests and personality assessments, print and web resources, and publications.
  • Demonstrated passion and experience in community development, program planning and execution, group facilitation and engagement, and coaching college students and alumni.


Working Conditions:
  • Hybrid work schedule requiring on-site work 3 days per week.
  • This is a one-year fixed-term position ending August 31, 2023.
