Department Profile

The Division of Student Equity and Success is responsible for developing and maintaining programs that meet the needs of a very diverse student population, while encouraging excellence and innovation in education. In consultation with the Director of Student Program Services, the International Admissions Specialist is responsible for implementing programs and services designed to support the retention and graduation of International students by addressing their unique academic, personal and professional needs in a supportive and safe environment. The International Admissions Specialist serves as the Designated School Official and is the liaison between the college, international students, and the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP). This position is responsible for the recruitment, outreach, and retention efforts of international student services; guiding students through the process of studying in the U.S., maintaining records to ensure student are meeting federal program compliance. The International Admission Specialist will work in the Office of International Student Services, under the supervision of the Director of Student Program Services.

Provides program support and assistance to international students in the areas of recruitment, admissions and registration, immigration, financial aid, social and cultural adjustment and the collegiate experience in the United States.

This position requires the ability to understand and successfully process international students into college life. The position serves as a designated school official for immigration matters.

Job Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitates applications and admissions processes for the International Students Program. Explains program requirements and admission policies and procedures. Informs students on obtaining necessary credentials and services such as visas, social security numbers, driver's license, housing, transportation, and medical insurance.
  • Reviews student transcripts and applications for admissibility, verifies immigration related information, and after notifying applicants, initiates and issues appropriate certifications and communications about student status.
  • Monitors outreach program activities to meet timelines that enable admission and authorized travel.
  • Serves as liaison with the marketing department to set-up advertisement, directories, and web site pages. Develops and maintains a master recruitment calendar.
  • Monitors subscription web site services to ensure they provide accurate information about the College, recommending changes as necessary. Answers student inquiries about the College admission procedures and program offerings. Organizes and sequences follow-up activities with prospective students.
  • Maintains and prepares student data for reporting purposes, maintaining frequent contact for student status or enrollment matters. Serves as liaison between various campus departments (housing, library, marketing, etc.) to coordinate services for international students.
  • Prepares student orientation materials and campus arrival packets, assisting with student logistics, orientation planning and implementation. Coordinates housing listings and local transportation needs.
  • Interprets Federal Immigration policies and laws as they apply to F-1 and related visa types. Creates, maintains, and updates program and student files and records, and enters student information in the federal government's Student Exchange Visitor Information System.
  • Advises potential students and interested parties of proper procedures for international student admission and visas, legal status, and the responsibilities of students.
  • Explains various assessments and testing schedules to students, referring complex questions to the appropriate staff.
  • Distribute and collect various forms including provision of grade/progress forms, insurance forms, transcripts, assessment and TOEFL scores, financial documents, health information, etc. Prepares student materials, packets, and facilitates student participation in activities.
  • Collects, copies, and tracks status of official documents such as I-20, I-94, passports, visas, etc. Maintains current information on, and knowledge of social security administration, Department of Motor Vehicles, IRS, Department of Homeland Security, and other appropriate governmental agency regulations.
  • Serves as an advocate for students in the application, renewal, and reinstatement processes.
  • Creates and sends newsletters, e-mails, flyers, letters, etc., to enrolled and prospective students, sponsors, agencies, and contacts. Revises handbooks, promotional materials, brochures, and other printed communications materials.
  • Serves as a liaison with various campus departments, colleges, and outside organizations, and assists with the development and implementation of international student services.
  • May participate in the development and implementation of social and cultural programs.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education and Experience
    The position requires an Associates Degree and 2 years of years of progressive experience in college admissions, financial aid, advising, or counseling support.

    Knowledge and Skills
    Requires in-depth knowledge of the procedures, processes, forms and legal requirements to admit international students, United States Citizenship and Immigration Service regulations, and College requirements for foreign students. Requires working knowledge of the admissions and registration processes, petitions, holds and other processes used by the College. Requires knowledge of the curricula, majors, and programs offered by the College. Requires a working knowledge of personal computer operations, common desktop productivity software, student information databases, and internet links used in education. Requires knowledge of the English language usage, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation sufficient to prepare reports and professional correspondence. Requires sufficient math skills to perform basic business mathematics and statistical calculations. Requires sufficient human relations skills to convey procedural information, exercise sensitivity, and exhibit professional etiquette when dealing with others. Requires special skills in working with students from different cultures, including skills at introducing them to cultures in the United States.

    Requires the ability to learn, interpret, apply, and make decisions guided by up-to-date BHS regulations pertaining to international students. Requires the ability to perform highly detailed work accurately and in compliance with regulations and rules. Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality of confidential and/or sensitive information. Requires the ability to compose general and specialized office correspondence. Requires the ability to work independently and collaboratively, follow oral and written directions, organize workload, work under pressure and meet deadlines, timetables, and compile data for reports. Requires the ability to demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of international students. Requires the ability to work cooperatively and productively with others.

    Physical Abilities
    Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to move to and sit at a workstation for extended periods of time. Requires sufficient arm, hand, and finger dexterity in order to use a personal computer keyboard and other office equipment. Requires hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings, on the phone, and distinguish sound prompts from equipment. Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens.

    Licenses and Certificates
    May require a valid driver's license.

    Working Conditions
    Work is primarily performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.

    Salary/Fringe Benefits

    Grade 34 on District Classified Salary Schedule ($4,544.43 -$5,461.32/month).

    Health and welfare benefits include District contribution for medical/dental/vision benefits and employee life insurance ($50,000). (Cash in lieu option available on medical insurance.)

    Participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System that is also integrated with Social Security.

    Conditions of Employment:
    This is a full-time, 12-calendar month classified position Hours of employment are:Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pmInitial placement of employees on Classified Salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109.Board Policy 2905 requires mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations as a condition of employment.
