DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Physics at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate working with the experimental high-energy physics group. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2022.

The experimental high energy physics group at the University of Toronto has an active program of participation in the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The experimental high energy physics group is a major participant in the Phase II upgrade of the central tracker to a tracking system, the ITk, consisting of solid-state sensors. The experimental group is an ITk module assembly site, which will require the Senior Research Associate to play a leading role in managing both the production and quality assurance of modules in Toronto and at Celestica Inc. The successful candidate will continue through the production, installation and commissioning of the ITk, currently scheduled to be in 2026. During the production phase, work will be based on the University of Toronto campus; with three one-week long trips to CERN per year, for coordination with collaborators.


The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in project management, microelectronics development and construction; with at least 3 years of experience in the assembly and testing of silicon detector modules or a related field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education – Ph.D. in Particle physics or a related field. A master’s degree with a specialty in Process Engineering may be considered.

Experience – At least 3 years of experience in project management, assembly and testing of microelectronics systems or silicon tracking detectors.

Skills – the ability to work well in an international team of researchers and manage a group of researchers, graduate students and undergraduate students.
