The Entrepreneurship Hatchery is helps students with entrepreneurial ambitions form teams, develop new competencies and launch their Startup companies. Over the past ten years, The Hatchery has helped launch over 100 new startups, which have collectively have raised over $100 million in seed funding. The goal of the Engineering Entrepreneurship Hatchery is to develop the entrepreneurial human capital and launch start-ups within the Faculty of Engineering and the University at large

Description:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Hatchery Programs Lead (PL)) will have a mandate to provide expertise, guide, and coordinate the services offered to Hatchery teams under the Hatchery Programs offerings e.g. NEST, LaunchLab, UTIAS, Social and Alumni. The Hatchery Programs goal is to support the startups that have applied to the Hatchery and in the process of moving to the “Go-To_Market” stage. The PL will be instrumental in creating a steady pipeline of start-ups for the Hatchery Go-To-Market stage. The PL will provide Hatchery startups with the resources including advisory boards, the coordination of MBA, Masters of Innovation and Faculty of Law connectors and start-ups’ human capital needs. The PL will play a pivotal leadership role in designing, operating and continuously improving this offering for undergraduate student, graduate-student and Professor-focused programming to foster entrepreneurship; maintaining partnerships across institutional, governmental, industry sectors. The incumbent will, collaboratively, mentor engineering students to create technically, organizationally, and financially strong and vibrant new businesses; Harness vast and varied resources of the faculty and alumni to help students and recent graduates succeed through fostering an ecosystem of support for entrepreneurs. The PL will design and deliver workshops; provide advice to students on all phases of new business creation, including prototype development, team building, financing, and growth; and facilitate the involvement of high-caliber volunteers and corporate partners.

Qualifications:

Education:

Degree in Business or Bachelor degree in Engineering. P.Eng required. To effectively and safely advise the students, the position requires extensive training in engineering practices, design, ethics, and corporate structure stemming from obtaining the P.Eng. license.

Experience:

Related experience in the startup community e.g. being a co-founder, fundraising activities etc. is desired. Experience with and knowledge of business plans, financial plans, tech industry preferred.

Skills:

Strong communication skills, including exceptional presentation skills and a clear and persuasive writing style; excellent analytical skills and an ability to solve problems in a creative and efficient manner; strong decision-making skills; and superior planning and time management skills with a focus on executing and completing tasks under pressure and within deadlines.

Other:

Ability to actively listen to students and guide them in creating successful start-ups; ability to organize and motivate faculty members as well as external volunteers; proven ability to work collegially and effectively, across corporate organizations and the University (or similar environment ); initiative and flexibility; dynamic working style; and sense of humor, is appreciated. Demonstrated ability to create a welcoming and inclusive working environment; Ability to work in a highly diverse community and to work constructive and cooperatively with a variety of campus partners in order to foster a support an environment of trust, respect and collaboration. Travel may be required.
