Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The University Librarian and Vice Provost directs the University Libraries composed of the Walter Royal Davis Library (the general research library for the Humanities and Social Sciences) the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library, the R.B. House Undergraduate Library, the Health Sciences Library, the Sloane Art Library, the School of Information and Library Science Library, the Kenan Science Library, the Sonya Hanes Stone Center for Black Culture Library, and the Music Library. There is a budget coordinating responsibility for the Law Library though it reports to the Dean of the School of Law. The UNC Chapel Hill Libraries hold 8.2 million volumes, and extensive collections of manuscripts, audio visual, microforms, graphics, government documents and rare books. There are five distinguished special collections including the North Carolina Collection, the Southern Folklife Collection, Southern Historical Collection, the Rare Books Collection and University Archives. Annual expenditures are approximately $40 million. Staff and librarians number 290 with approximately 300 part-time student employees.

Position Summary:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks nominations and applications for the position of University Librarian and Vice Provost for University Libraries. The University Librarian and Vice Provost for University Libraries reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and serves on the Deans’ Council. An elected administrative board representing all faculty divisions provides advice on budget and policy matters.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

An earned terminal degree, record of exceptional leadership success, and evidence of scholarly, professional, or creative achievement is required.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Post-Baccalaureate degree required with at least ten years or greater relevant professional experience; record of exceptional leadership success; and evidence of professional achievement is required. For candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, a bachelor’s degree and twelve years or greater relevant professional experience in substitution will be accepted.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Significant achievement in the administration of research libraries including strong and inspiring leadership, a commitment to building and sustaining a diverse workforce, evidence of effective budget management, knowledge of assessment tools and use of data to evaluate programs and services; a record of success in planning and program development, collection management, information technology, leadership and management of special collections staff, and organizational development and fundraising; a commitment to excellence in research and teaching and an understanding of issues confronting higher education; a record of collegiality and accomplishment in collaborative activity; a strong understanding of the issues of scholarly communication and open access and the challenges faced by the 21st century research library; the ability to articulate a vision and provide strategic direction for libraries in the rapidly changing information environment and to provide leadership at the national and regional levels on research library issues.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina is about 30 miles from the state capital, Raleigh, and 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Class size: Barely five percent of undergraduate classes contain more than 100 students; two-thirds of undergraduate classes have fewer than 30 students. Forty-one percent have fewer than 20 students, including First Year Seminars, in which first-year students work closely with professors.

Sports and athletic programs: UNC is an NCAA Division I school with 28 varsity teams. Carolina is the proud home of the Dean Smith Center, Kenan Stadium, Carmichael Auditorium, Koury Natatorium, and many other fine athletic facilities. Students join more than 60 intramural and club sports, which include baseball, bowling, crew, golf, lacrosse, rock climbing, rugby, tae kwon do, and ultimate frisbee. Technological facilities: Students find multiple uses for Carolina's state-of-the-art technological resources. The MetaLab oversees the development of SunSITE, one of the world's busiest digital library and electronic publishing projects.

Students may open e-mail accounts, and many use campus computer resources to construct personal Web pages. Students in residence halls have hardwired network connections to the Internet and cable television in their rooms. At the ATN Training center, students may take classes on software packages and utilities. Computer labs are available for student use all over campus.

Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
