Director of Strategic Communications

Division of Student Success

The Division of Student Success is recruiting a director of Strategic Communications, a senior-level position in the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Success. The director will manage the communications and marketing staff and work collaboratively across the division and with campus partners. We are seeking a talented and experienced individual to lead, motivate, supervise, and evaluate a team of qualified professionals to promote a consistent, professional, and collaborative image for the University and division and help achieve the University’s short-term and long-term goals. The director will be expected to develop and implement creative and measurable communications and marketing plans that encompass advertising, public relations, market research, publications, digital/social media, events, media relations, and other aspects of strategic marketing. The position will manage the budget to support the strategic communications; manage the student success websites; work with the campus community to design, implement, and launch a university-wide customer relationship management (CRM) system. This position reports to the Vice Provost for Student Success (VPSS) and serves on the VPSS executive leadership team.

Qualifications
Key Job Functions

    Develop, implement, evaluate and refine a comprehensive marketing strategy to advance the student success initiatives and achieve critical institutional goals. Use innovative marketing strategies to build relationships, enhance institutional reputation, strengthen the University of Tennessee Knoxville brand, and achieve state and federal legislative priorities. Develop and assess measurable goals and objectives that advance the Strategic Framework and marketing objectives.Direct the daily activities of the Student Success Communications team to achieve maximum impact with various campus activities, including direct communication to students, families, campus partners, executive university leadership, and donors.   Oversee the communications functions for the Vice Provost of Student Success, including media relations, speeches, written communications, and special communication materials. Oversee the division’s use, policies, and procedures of the new CRM. Develop and manage a communications strategy to promote the university-wide Volunteer Experience initiative.  Build a culture of collaboration with internal partners, including the eleven reporting offices, Office of Communications, enrollment management, student life, academic affairs, and the Office of the Chancellor and Office of the Provost.  Serve as a communications advisor to the Vice Provost and other VPSS executive leadership team members.  Provide communications support to university-wide programs and help leaders identify communications needs and resources. Manage strategic communications budget of approximately $300,000 to support student success initiatives.
 

Required Education & Experience

    Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, public relations, marketing, communications or related field Minimum 5 years of experience in strategic marketing or communicationsSupervision experienceDemonstrated success in managing, supporting, and motivating staff
Preferred Education & Experience

    Master’s degree in English, journalism, public relations, marketing, communications or related field Directly related work experience in higher education, students or Generation ZExperience working with a customer relationship management system (CRM) Experience with web-based content management systems (CMS) Demonstrated ability to responsibly manage a budget Creative and strategic application of digital and social media technologies Experience and expertise in marketing, media relations, public affairs, crisis communications, issues management, social media and public relations Commitment to the ideals of a major public, land-grant research university

Anticipated hiring salary:  Minimum of $80,000
