Job Description:

Budget Title: Assistant Director of College Housing (SL-3)

Salary: $61,000

Residential Life serves the needs of 7,000+ residents through a system of six residential colleges. We strive to support the academic mission of the University by providing residents with a living-learning experience through our collegiate structure. We are strongly committed to the celebration of diversity and actively seek staff members who can serve as role models and have the ability to work with a widely diverse student population.

The Assistant Director:

  • Serves as a leader and role model for their community in developing a sense of identity through engagement with students, support of area traditions and implementation of educational initiatives that support the academic and personal success of students
  • Oversees the total operation of two area which consists of 1,000-1,600 bed housing per area while working in a team atmosphere
  • Trains, supervises and evaluates full-time Community Director's and/or Resident Directors and professional support staff. Area staff includes 16-62 student staff; may include graduate-level Assistant Residential Coordinators
  • Promotes an inclusive community through role modeling, challenging others, and emphasizing respect
  • Regularly interacts with residents, student staff and live-in professional during evenings and weekends in support of a culture and expectation of involvement and engagement
  • Teams with the areas of Collegiate Professors to enhance the living-learning community
  • Provide support the student conduct process within the residential areas
  • Serve as the on-site manager of the area offices and administrative work-flow
  • Develops and manages the area budgets and other financial resources
  • Provides direction and support to hall and area government advisors
  • Mentors a Departmental committee and may serve as a Residential Life representative on University committees
  • Coordinates aspects of crisis response for the area and participates in campus-wide duty coverage

This is a 12-month, live-off position with a salary of $61,000 and excellent benefits


  • Master's Degree
  • Two to four years residential life experience
  • Minimum of three years of progressive supervision experience
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and communication skills
  • Professional leadership and decision making abilities


  • Prior experience supervising full-time Resident Directors
  • Prior experience implementing new initiatives

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
