Position Summary:

Governors State University is seeking to hire a PART TIME Grant Writer for the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research. As a member of GSU, the Grant Writer will work closely with our faculty and staff team on providing writing and editing services for STEM and Health Sciences grants. The successful candidate will effectively collaborate with academia and various funding institutions to effectively submit proposals and proactively source opportunities to participate in grant competitions and will report to the Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research. This position will serve as an expert resource on matters pertaining to grant writing within the OSPR and will compile, compose, and maintain supplemental materials for individual faculty proposal submissions including compelling statements of institutional facilities/resources/ capabilities, data management, broader impacts, and similar requirements. This is a half-time position.


Essential Responsibilities
20% Perform various exploratory, information gathering and research functions for large institutional proposals; this includes the ability to abstract research and data for inclusion in large institutional submissions.20% Act as leverage to our faculty members to provide editing and writing support for funding opportunity proposals with agencies (NSF, NIH, HRSA, SAMHSA and other funding agencies).

20% Organize and develop funding proposals including writing, editing, and comprehensive strategy development that incorporate GSU’s mission and strategic plan.

10% Teach, advise, and consult with faculty and staff to improve their grant writing and reporting technique and skills.

5% Proactively share suitable grant opportunities related to our faculty expertise and goals in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Health and Human Services.

5% Develop a yearly calendar of applications for grant opportunities that are applicable to STEM and Health Sciences.

10% Bring together teams of faculty and staff to brainstorm and develop proposal ideas suitable and competitive for GSU.

10% Provide grant writing training to the GSU faculty and staff community.

Salary Range: $35,607.00 (PART TIME POSITION)
(This is a non-unionized position. Salary starts at the base and is determined based on Education and Experience exceeding the minimum qualifications).

Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIRED: COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPTS, WHICH INCLUDES THE EARNED DEGREE AND CONFERRED DATE MUST BE ATTACHED FOR CONSIDERATION OF THIS POSITION (See “Special instructions to applicants” section below).

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Economics, English or a field related to the position.
  • Minimum of five (5) years in grant-writing experience in an academic setting with knowledge of federal grant guidelines.
  • Successful grant writing must be demonstrated through a portfolio of funded proposals.

Preferred Qualifications:

Desired Education and Experience

  • Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely (written and verbal).
  • Experience and ability in technical writing (writing and editing technical documents).
  • Bachelors or advanced degree in Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Health Sciences or related fields of studies.
  • Experience writing grants for Illinois grants is a plus.
  • Experience with NSF and NIH grant process and guidelines.
  • Ability to work across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to effectively form close partnerships with our faculty team and government agencies.
