Summary of Duties:

The Special Assistant to the Vice President provides high level support to the Vice President (VP) and Associate Vice President (AVP) for the Office of International Programs (IP). The position manages calendars, including meeting times, locations, logistics and other critical information. In addition, this position coordinates frequent and complex travel arrangements for the VP and AVP and provides in-depth coordination for high-level delegations. The position also composes correspondence, coordinates preparation of other documents as needed for the VP and AVP. Serves as a liaison between the public including internal and external associates and the VP and AVP.

The position will maintain a high level of knowledge of University policies and procedures and will act as a liaison for policy matters and university programs with WSU personnel, community, private sector, local, state, and federal agencies.


Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in business administration or other relevant field AND five (5) years of managing administrative support experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Outlook and/or similar programs.

  • Excellent calendaring and trip preparation/response while others are on travel.

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, including professional experience in preparing correspondence, reports, and or/presentations.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting office business with international persons or organizations.

  • Experience working in a professional higher education administrative environment.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational, interpersonal, and communications skills.

  • Experience in event planning and/or arranging travel logistics.

  • Experience working with confidential information.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
