Job Summary: The Manager of Diversity and Inclusion provides oversight and planning for the development, implementation, and delivery of diversity, equity, and inclusion engagement and programming activities in a college, department, or division.

The goal of the College is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment focused on the success of all students. The Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) Director will collaborate with students, faculty, and staff and alumni from across the College and University to design, implement and assess a comprehensive program with focused recruitment, retention and completion strategies for diverse students utilizing best practices from the field.
The MEP Director will assume responsibility for the day-to-day functions within the areas of student engagement, programming for student development, budget management, and assessment analysis of the program. The director will work with the college’s administration and the MEP Advisory Board to develop and drive initiatives for student success, with the focus of improving recruitment, retention and graduation rates, and increasing diversity within the college.
This position will work with the College of Engineering Welcome Center staff to focus specifically on recruiting students from underrepresented groups. This includes coordinating, consulting, supporting, and providing assistance to further the diversity goals of the College of Engineering, and leading the development and implementation of proactive diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the College.
In collaboration with the college faculty and staff, the director will develop and oversee retention initiatives consistent with best practices in the field. Working with MEP Mentors, this position will provide guidance, support, and student development opportunities to CoE students of underrepresented populations. The MEP Director will serve as advisor and resource person for specified student organizations (e.g., NSBE, SHPE, etc.) and will serve as the college representative at regional and national meetings related to diverse students and Engineering. This position will assess potential barriers to develop and implement strategies that support student satisfaction and retention, assist with CoE mentoring program (Mentor UPP), and in conjunction with the Dean and college leadership, champion the importance and value of an inclusive environment for all students.
The director will be required to keep current in effective practices of diversity, equity and inclusion; assist the staff in the External Affairs and Development office in obtaining external funding to support program initiatives; monitor progress toward accomplishing goals related to the recruitment, retention, and graduation of a diverse student body; and produce an annual report on program outcomes.
This position will implement, assess, and evaluate best practices related to diversity and inclusion, and monitor progress in accomplishing the plan goals. The director will be expected to establish data-driven programmatic goals and benchmarks focused on student learning as it relates to building community for diversity, equity and inclusion; and create reports to determine program effectiveness. Grant and proposal writing will be necessary to augment programmatic activities and to increase the impact of the program.
The director will work with the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to develop engagement opportunities that promote DEI objectives, and recruit, retain, and ensure the success of all students within the college. This position will identify diversity training and coordinate and/or conduct training where appropriate.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and (5) five years of professional experience or Master’s degree with some professional experience working in an education setting.
Skills and Knowledge: The Director must have a record of good public relations, a strong proponent for diversity and inclusion, with a commitment and desire to help young people develop and succeed. A keen understanding of diversity and inclusion issues, culturally relevant pedagogies and best practices; strategic thinking and planning, interpersonal and communication skills, and collaboration skills. Ability to gain acceptance by all age groups of people in the college/University community as well as external constituents. High energy level and ability to initiate new programs and initiatives, then manage implementation and coordination of such. Experience designing, delivering, evaluating and/or leading activities, programs, and services related to student engagement is desired.
Must be a results-driven, detailed, team-oriented individual with a demonstrated leadership in shaping strategic vision and priorities. They must be innovative and possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills that enable performance of duties in a timely fashion with attention to detail. Excellent oral and written communication skills including high quality presentation skills and the ability to communicate through various platforms and modalities to a wide variety of constituents, including current students, staff, faculty, donors, and potential students and parents is essential. The ability to exercise good judgment to manage financial resources, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff to facilitate positive and collaborative processes and initiatives coupled with measurable programmatic deliverables to accomplish the goals and objectives of the college. The director must be able to communicate effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures and language groups, and demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with a diverse population of students. The ability to strategically plan and work effectively with faculty, staff and administrators to develop and implement uses of educational best practices in the area of diversity to follow through on strategies and achieve results.
Effective project management and analytical skills are needed to establish and execute long-range strategies and objectives that build consensus, cultivate collaborative teams, and integrate multiple initiatives simultaneously while working independently and also in close collaboration with others within the college and university. Knowledge and understanding of racial and cultural differences; sensitivity to issues and concerns of multicultural student groups. Collaborative leader attuned to cultivating relationships and garnering the trust and confidence of students, faculty, and staff and establish credibility. The director will facilitate dialogue on sensitive topics/difficult issues in order to develop, implement, administer and evaluate high impact practices that foster programmatic success for all students within the college. The director must have demonstrated success in developing data informed strategies for programs and services, and possess a record of leadership and the potential to effectively contribute to the mission of the College of Engineering.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s or doctoral degree and experience in student success programs for diverse students in STEM, diversity and inclusion management; experience with college-student retention and success or supervising student organizations, managing organizations, projects, and financial matters; knowledge of student development theory, best practices and trends of the Federal Trio Programs: Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services.
