Job Details

St. Norbert College, a nationally-ranked, private, Catholic, liberal arts college is seeking a Teacher for the Children's Center on-campus. This position is a Lead Childcare teacher responsible for providing safe and age-appropriate programming for children ages 2.5 and 3 in accordance with the St. Norbert College mission, WI Department of Children and Family regulation, and Children’s Center procedures.

Specific responsibilities:

Develop electronic lesson plans and provide developmentally appropriate instruction based on but not limited to: NAEYC/DAP (National Association for the Education of Young Children), WMELS (WI Model Early Learning Standards), STEM (Science-Technology- Engineering-Math) and CC (Creative Curriculum). - 15%

Provide nurturing and secure environment based on sound social-emotional theory and best practice, both in the classroom as well as outside on the playground or on campus outings.  Establish routines and provide positive guidance.  Lead and participate in activities that may include sitting on the floor, running, throwing, kicking and lifting.  Administer medication to children upon written request of parents.Teaching will take place in the classroom as well as outside when the temperature is between zero to 90 degrees. - 50%

Engage in ongoing daily communications with families through emails, phone, and written communication.  Conduct parent conferences as needed and complete child assessments two times per year.  Plan and participate in family events throughout the year.  Send weekly lesson plans to families via email. - 15%

Attend IEP meetings as necessary.  Maintain required program records and children’s files. Contact and follow up with facilities department when needed for the Center.  Participate in 3-4 off site field trips each year. - 5%

Collaborate with St. Norbert faculty to provide effective experiences for St. Norbert college pre-service teachers who use the Center for educational coursework.  Support and mentor student workers and pre-service teachers. Mentor and grade SNC students in their lab experience in 4K. - 5%

Maintain an active Registry Certificate with the State of WI.  Attend professional development opportunities as required by the Department of Children and Families.  Work as a collegial member of an early childhood team to ensure integration between childcare and 4K. - 5%

Attend all required staff meetings.  Take part in monthly weather and fire procedures.  Open and close Center as needed.  Supervise lunch in order to ensure a peaceful meal experience. - 5%

Perform additional duties as assigned and attend College required training. Regular attendance is required. Work in a manner that is aware of personal safety and the safety of others and observe safety, health and sanitation codes, regulations, or practices required by the College or governmental authority.

Supervision Exercised Over:

  • 20-25 Student Workers

  • 8-12 pre-service teachers

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Education -

  • Associate's Degree in Education discipline or a related discipline.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience and Credentials -

  • 2 years experience in an early childhood setting. 

  • WI Registry certification (w/in 90 days of hire)

  • Bloodborne Pathogen Training

  • CPR Training and Certification (w/in 3 months of hire)

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse campus environment or commitment to do so as an employee of St. Norbert College.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, students, and customers, particularly in conflict situations.

  • Ability to talk politely and resolve customer service issues.

  • Ability to multitask, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments.

  • Skilled in basic math computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Ability to exercise good judgement and decisions in an expeditious manner.

  • Skilled at setting a good example for others, children and students alike. 

  • Ability to concentrate and focus in a noisy environment.

  • Ability to use developmentally appropriate discipline techniques. 

  • Knowledge of child development principles.

  • Ability to pass a post offer functional capacity test.

Equipment Used:
Computer (PC, Laptop, Smartboard, iPads), phone, printer/copier, and other general office equipment.  Toys, water hose and sprinkler, air conditioner, cots, dvd player, television,  kitchen equipment (oven/range, dishwasher), kitchen utensils, vacuum, brooms, and other general cleaning supplies.

Working Conditions:
Regular work hours are Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 5:30 pm with several interruptions throughout the day.  Weekends or evenings are generally not required and position is expected to participate in 3-4 off-site field trips annually. Work outdoors in Wisconsin climate with temperatures between 0 and 90 degrees..

  • Generally a position with a variety of walking, running, throwing, kicking, standing, sitting, crouching and kneeling to engage with children. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling no more than 10 lbs frequently with occasional need to lift up to 50 lbs.  Will need to move within Center and across campus in doing activities with children.
