Position Purpose: The Access and Collection Services Librarian supports learning by providing oversight to Circulation, Collections, and Electronic Acquisitions.

  • Essential Job Functions:

  • Manages the operations of Access Services: opening the library, overseeing daily circulation functions, I-Share and Tipasa Interlibrary Loan systems, and course reserves. Stays informed of trends in Access Services. Interprets copyright policies and licensing provisions.
  • Manages library stacks; develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure accurate shelving, shelf-reading, shifting and organizing collections as needed; creates accurate signage.
  • Regularly analyzes collection to assure that all library materials are current, relevant, and in good condition.
  • Utilizes vendor services and professional tools to evaluate and select materials and resources in various physical and digital formats. Orders all new physical and electronic library materials directly from vendors in a timely manner. Renews electronic resource subscriptions directly from vendors or as part of a package through our consortium.
  • Works with Systems Librarian to troubleshoot and fix any resource access issues in the library ILS.
  • Responds to collection requests from faculty, including communicating with faculty to determine if licensed items should be renewed upon expiration.
  • Receives, catalogs, and processes new physical materials for the library’s collection. Catalogs and activates new electronic resources so that they are accessible through the library’s catalog.
  • Participates in determining annual budget allocations. Responsible for tracking expenditures and managing assigned budget.
  • Collaborates with University faculty to provide OER and other online resources to support their curriculum and provide no-cost materials for students.
  • Supervises activity of student workers in Access and Collection Services.
  • Compiles usage statistics, analyzes data, and prepares reports in support of library goals.
  • Identifies and adapts technology to department needs.
  • Attends continuing education workshops and webinars through our consortium.
  • Coordinates with Instruction Librarian to provide reference and research support services, including answering reference questions, designing and updating library Libguides, and acting as a liaison to assigned departments.
  • Serves on University committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Essential Job Requirements:

    Education:

    • ALA accredited master’s degree in library/information science.

    Experience:

    • Demonstrated experience (relevant coursework accepted) in two of the three following areas: cataloging, acquisitions, and circulation. Two or more years of Technical Services experience preferred.

    Skills:

    • A collaborative disposition. Willingness to work with library colleagues in a rapidly changing information environment. Ability to work collaboratively with other campus departments and individuals.
    • Dedication to teamwork. We are a small department where each person contributes unique talents to the whole. Flexibility and acceptance of change are necessary.
    • Communicates effectively to student patrons, co-workers, and the campus community both orally and in writing.

    Special Requirements:

    • Occasional evening and weekend work will be required.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
    • May include prolonged periods of sitting or standing.

About 700 student-athletes compete in sports.     A Brief History of Aurora University

    Founded in 1893 in Mendota, Illinois, as Mendota Seminary, the institution soon changed its name to Mendota College. By 1911, it had outgrown its facilities and the following year changed its name to Aurora College and moved to Aurora, where its students could take advantage of a thriving business environment and easy access to Chicago. In 1985, Aurora College changed its name to Aurora University to better reflect the magnitude of its academic offerings. Seven years later, Aurora University and George Williams College traditions blended when the two institutions entered into an affiliation agreement that paved the way for a merger eight years later. In 2010, the Woodstock Center opened to meet the needs of students in McHenry County and surrounding communities.
