Research Associate IIIThis position conducts research with and for faculty at the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy on externally funded projects and other research projects. Determining research opportunities, developing and submitting proposals in collaboration with other researchers. Independently executes such research activities for the Baker Center as detailed duties include performing literature reviews, providing expertise in data collection, preparing data for analyses, maintaining databases, developing forecasts, and providing comprehensive descriptive and causal inferences for projects. Other duties include communication on research findings to funders, professional audiences, and academic conferences, in addition to publishing white papers, research reports, policy briefs, and academic articles.

Duties include but are not limited to:


    Determining opportunities for externally-funded research from foundations, government agencies, and/or corporate entities.Developing and submitting proposals in collaboration with other researchers.Developing and maintaining budgets. Planning, conducting, and completing research projects using independent judgment.Allocating time between concurrent research projects and ensuring that deliverables are completed within specified time frames.Providing expertise in the collection and preparation of data for analysis.Contacting government agencies and/or other organizations to request data and other information.Maintaining databases.Using critical thinking and expertise to evaluate program and policies, conduct economic impact studies, develop forecasts, and conduct comprehensive econometric analyses for research projects.Developing detailed reports for research findings that clearly and succinctly communicate findings with the use of tables, graphs, and maps.Communicating research findings through presentations to funders and professional audiences.Mentoring and overseeing student research assistants when applicable.

    Developing, writing, and publishing policy briefs.Pursuing the publication of academic articles.Attending and participating in academic conferences.Maintaining knowledge and expertise in data analysis by completing training, classes, and learning new tools, techniques, programming languages, and/or software.Providing internal and external service by serving on committees or working groups that are related to the missions of the Baker Center.Serving as guest lecturer when needed.

    Interacting with and networking within the Baker Center and across campus to seek potential collaborators and to develop potential research projects.Determining opportunities for externally-funded research from foundations, government agencies, and/or corporate entities.Aiding and leading in the development and submission of proposals.Ensuring allocation of resources are adequate for proposal budget guidelines.
    Ability to work well in collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.Ability and flexibility to work in a highly collaborative, fast-moving environment.Ability to communicate well with faculty and staff, collaborators, and funders in the development and execution of research projects.Ability to self-manage concurrent projects with specified timelines.Maintain knowledge of data sources, management of large, complex databases and data analysis techniques including those at the forefront of data management and analysis (e.g., econometric methods, data storage, programming languages, machine learning, etc.).Working knowledge of political science and social science disciplines.Working knowledge of academic organizational structures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSPh.D. in political science, economics, public policy, or a related field is required with 2-3 previous experience as a research assistant is preferred.

2-3 years experience leading federal- and state-funded grants and research projects.
