Communications Specialist

Regular Full-time, Market Range 6 (grant funded)

The communications specialist will support the International Program Office (IPO) of the World Data System (WDS) situated at UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORII). The WDS focus is on sustainability, trust in, and quality of open scientific data services, products, and information. The communications specialist will lead communications activities with internal and external stakeholders for participation and fundraising. The communications specialist will be a full-time employee of the University of Tennessee and shall report to the WDS-IPO Executive Director.

Job Duties/Responsibilities
Marketing & communications strategy

  • Contribute to the development of communication and marketing strategies to align with WDS strategic goals and events including recommendations for best practices and software/technology
  • Aid in development and then implement communication plans for internal and external stakeholders – includes formatting and editing content, ensuring consistency and branding standards are met across campaigns, planning, and executing communication schedules, calendars, and campaigns
  • Other outreach and promotional activities as assigned
Website & technology platforms

  • Contribute recommendations and requirements and support the development of a new WDS website and membership tool
  • Update and maintain content for website, including formatting and editing content
  • Manage all social media platforms – including data for contact management system
  • Ensure compliance with UT communications best practices
Assessment & engagement

  • Develop key metrics for assessing communications and marketing success
  • Contribute to the assessment of stakeholder engagement


Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or relevant field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Master’s degree preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• Knowledge of the research data landscape

• Customer service skills.


  • Demonstrate ability to communicate with multiple audiences.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Skills in industry-standard software.
  • Effectively manage projects and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Develop and implement creative solutions to communication problems
