Description
The Office of Communications and Marketing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, seeks applications and nominations for the position of Senior Web Developer. This position leads the development, programming, and engineering of software running the university’s flagship website and other digital platforms. This position is eligible for fully-remote work and does not require relocation.

 

Duties/Responsibilities

The ideal candidate is a skilled backend developer with demonstrated experience in contemporary web services, languages, and frameworks. We’re looking for someone with a deep understanding of how the web is built and a passion for innovating and problem-solving with code.

The Senior Web Developer:

    makes key decisions on the engineering approach to the university's primary digital communication platforms;creates and maintains software running utk.edu and university websites, as well as the software that delivers the university's web design system;develops quality assurance plans to ensure projects meet standards of excellence and conducts review of coding on digital properties in support of those plans;creates and maintains consistent development and accessibility standards;serves as technical liaison between the university and software/hardware vendors; andmaintains technical documentation and records to support developed software.
 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The Senior Web Developer has a strong grasp of several programming languages and maintains the ability to learn and implement new technologies as projects require.

 

Required technical skills include:

    advanced knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and other web languages, particularly JavaScript and PHP;advanced knowledge of NodeJS, ReactJS, NextJS;advanced knowledge of web standards, including web accessibility standards;experience developing WordPress plugins and themes;ability to work with API integrations, such as GraphQL and RestAPI; andexperience using Git.
Additional, preferred skills include:

    experience developing for the WordPress Gutenberg editor;experience developing for a decoupled (headless) WordPress system; experience developing WordPress block themes; andknowledge of CSS pre-processors.


Qualifications
Qualifications

Required: Technical or vocational training with at least eight years of professional experience directly related to software or web development; or associate's or bachelor's degree with at least five years of professional experience directly related to software or web development.

 

Preferred: Associate's or bachelor's degree with at least five years of professional experience directly related to software or web development.

 

Salary

Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience.
