Position Summary

The mission of the Information Technology Division is to develop the long-term infrastructure, services, and strategy necessary to support the University's mission of learning, discovery, and engagement. The IT Division has the stewardship responsibility for core IT assets on campus and the obligation to provide the services, training, and community building necessary to realize the benefits of those investments across the San Diego State University community.

This position will provide 'lights on' technical service and support for the Division of Research and Innovation (DRI) and the College of Graduate Studies (CGS). The incumbent will be responsible for managing all department hardware including desktop and laptop computers, software applications and websites. The incumbent must deliver on day-to-day user requests & problems as well as focus on longer term planning of department technology needs. The incumbent will also work closely with campus IT partners to coordinate services including authentication, file storage/backups, and centralized virus monitoring and patch management.

This position requires strong communication and problem-solving skills. The incumbent must be effective working one on one with end users and university IT staff to diagnose and resolve problems and respond effectively to requests and issues that arise in a department computing environment including but not limited to hardware failures, virus threats, new computing needs and evolving campus standards. The incumbent must have a proven ability to manage multiple priorities at once and be adept at prioritizing, communicating and delivering to commitments. The incumbent must have the ability to effectively drive problems and issues to resolution and be able to bring structure to unstructured situations. The incumbent should be prepared to provide clear examples of their accomplishments in this area from past job performance. This position will provide support to users during normal business hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday and will not be eligible for a telework assignment until after 9-12 months in the position. At that point in time telework will be considered based on performance to date and the needs of the divisions being supported

Full-time, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A minimum of one year of journey level or skilled experience in maintenance, repair and/or operation of computers and electronic equipment.
  • Experience working in a service desk environment.
  • Experience in a university information technology environment.
  • Experience managing websites and tracking usage and performance.

Specialized Skills
  • A minimum of one year of experience in a help desk environment. (College work experience or intern experience counts.)
  • Experience setting up, configuring, and troubleshooting Windows and Mac desktops and laptops.
  • Strong problem-solving skills - be able to bring suggestions and alternatives to technical problems.
  • Ability to work with third party vendors and university personnel to address time sensitive issues.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with others; maintain a cooperative working relationship with all colleagues.
  • Strong attention to detail skills is required to anticipate issues and solve problems effectively.
  • Must have customer friendly, can-do attitude.
  • Able to lift 40 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,778 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,372 - $10,792 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
