PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Primary purpose is to assist the Head Baseball Coach in student athlete development with all activities relative to the teaching, training, skill development, and conditioning of student athletes, with specific emphasis on skill instruction and development at practices and individual training sessions as a men’s baseball pitching coach. Secondary duties are to assist with program administrative support, NAIA compliance, and recruiting.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical skill instruction to aid in the development of student-athletes, especially in regard to position players.
  • Conduct individual training sessions with student-athletes geared at skill development of position players.
  • At the direction of the head coach, develop and execute practice plans that will prepare the team physically and mentally for competition.
  • Assess player’s skills, monitors players during practice and competitions, and keeps the head baseball coach informed of the athletic performance of the students.
  • Assist the head baseball coach with supervising student athletes during practices and competition.
  • Assist in the preparation of team for games by contributing strategies and aiding in daily preparation of organized and effective practices.
  • Prepare scouting reports on opponents in preparation for competition.
  • Monitor student-athletes academic progress ensuring student athletes meet eligibility standards and advance towards a degree.
  • Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
  • Monitor and assist in the rehabilitation of injured student-athletes as directed by Team Physicians and Sports Medicine staff.
  • Coordinate with Sports Medicine and Strength & Conditioning staff to organize and monitor the physical conditioning of student-athletes.
  • Model sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Responsible for performing all duties within the framework of NAIA, the Sun Conference, and AMU rules and regulations.
  • Assist in coordinating the preparation and submission of all the necessary NAIA compliance forms (i.e. practice logs, recruiting folders, official visit forms, etc.)
  • Assist in monitoring academics amongst student athletes, ensuring student-athletes progress in degree advancement and meet NAIA eligibility and University standards.
  • Assist in evaluating prospective student athlete talent and recruiting prospective student-athletes who will be successful in the classroom and contribute positively to the men’s baseball program and the University community.
  • At the direction of the head coach, communicate via phone, emails and letters, with prospective student-athletes and parents.
  • Assist in the planning and directing of the scouting of prospective student-athletes including, but not limited to determining the recruiting events and competitions to attend and the prospective student-athletes to be evaluated.
  • Assist with on-campus official and unofficial visits of prospective student-athletes per University and NAIA policies.
  • Assist in the development and coordination of fund-raising events for the student athletes in the baseball program within the framework of the university and departmental guidelines.
  • Reinforce the AMU mission and ideals of devotion to service by designing appropriate events for the team to give back to the community and serve others.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree required

EXPERIENCE: One or two years’ experience coaching is preferable but not required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Teaching and baseball pitching coaching skills and experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally, by phone, in person, and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff and the public, while representing the Athletic Department and AMU in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner
  • General knowledge of collegiate level men’s baseball programs, and the baseball sport, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of NAIA governing rules and ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the NAIA and the University
  • Knowledge of sports team teaching and management methods
  • Proficiency with personal computer applications
  • Knowledge of baseball equipment.    
  • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on departmental and organizational policies and procedures
  • Understanding of the University’s Catholic mission and its philosophy regarding student-athletes
  • PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations, along with sufficiency in movement relevant to the sport of baseball: lifting, carrying equipment, standing, walking, running, throwing, catching, swinging, bending, stooping, and kneeling. 

    WORKING CONDITIONS: Requires the ability to travel overnight to away games, with significant night and weekend hours. Requires the ability to promote positive sportsmanship, and maintain an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, coercion, and harassment.
