Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job:

The Department of Forensic Science is seeking to hire a Post-Doctoral Fellow. The Post-Doctoral Fellowship is a one-year assignment. The successful candidate will be expected to: 1) Conduct research in the area of forensic paint examinations as well as an unexplored/non-routine area of trace evidence that involves the use of multiple methods of microscopy and instrumental analysis; 2) assist with the maintenance and development of the research operations of the trace evidence laboratory within the department; 3) contribute administratively to the advancement of research by writing reports and publications as well as assisting with the supervision and evaluation of graduate students’ research.

Educational Requirements for the Position:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Forensic Science, or any relevant natural science with concentration in forensic science.

Experience Required for the Position:

The successful candidate shall demonstrate: 1) ability and experience with a variety of methods used for the forensic analysis of trace materials that include light microscopy (polarized light microscopy and dispersion staining, fluorescence, comparison microscopy, and GRIM 3), UV-Vis microspectrophotometry, micro FTIR spectroscopy, micro Raman spectroscopy, pyrolysis gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (pyGCMS), and elemental analysis (e.g., SEM-EDS or XRF spectroscopy); 2) ability to perform basic statistical data analysis; 3) knowledge of concepts of scientific evidence interpretation focusing on the Bayesian approach; experience with the use of Bayesian networks is highly desirable; 4) ability and experience in troubleshooting and maintenance of various instruments for the forensic analysis of trace materials; 5) established productivity of scholarly products including publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at forensic meetings.
