The Office of Engineering Communications within the Tickle College of Engineering seeks to hire a communications specialist/writer. This position serves as a content writer and editor for strategic college communications to ensure brand consistency, style edits, structure, and flow.

This position will focus on storytelling to showcase the work of the college's students, faculty, and alumni and regularly produces content to create awareness among local, statewide, and national stakeholders about campus issues, successes, and other key messaging.

This position works collaboratively with the TCE communications team and faculty across the college to provide stories to further enhance research strengths and other marketing efforts.


-Generate science- and research-related news and feature stories that advance the university’s strategic goals and objectives

-Translate scientific studies and topics into understandable and compelling content for print and digital media

-Regularly produce content to create awareness among local, statewide and national (and sometimes international) stakeholders about the university's ground-breaking multidisciplinary work, research institutes, and other contributions that make UT a top research university.

-Collaborate with other team members to execute integrated marketing and communications plans that advance the university's research-related priorities.

-Communicate to internal and external audiences through personal contact, news pitches and releases, social media, faculty/staff and student electronic newsletters and other in-house publications.

-Maintain and build key relationships within the college, university, and in the media

-Pitches UT researchers, scholars, and experts as leading sources for local, national, and international media, including trade, industry, and niche publications.

- Provide copy editing support for all forms of written content: website stories, news releases, social media, features, internal stories, annual reports and other publications, promotional material, newsletters and more.

Minimum Requirements:

Required Abilities and Experience:

    Associate degree in Communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, advertising or related field and four years’ experience in writing professionally for a media organization, news service, online or print magazine, corporate/PR communication environment, advertising/creative agency or related field    Knowledge of AP and Chicago editorial style and its usage to ensure consistency and professionalism.Knowledge of journalistic writing practices, ethics, and necessity of commitment to accuracy.Knowledge of audiences and communication needs in higher education.Knowledge of what makes content newsworthy and necessary elements for a well-written story.Writes or edits all high-profile content and pieces for style as well as tone and structure.Skilled in conducting simple research, interviews, writing, and copy editing involved in producing well-written content.Skilled in applying attention to detail, being organized, and working effectively with minimal supervision.
Preferred Abilities and Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree in Communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, advertising or related field and two years’ experience in in writing professionally for a media organization, news service, online or print magazine, corporate/PR communication environment, advertising/creative agency or related fieldAbility to translate technical, scientific, or academic language into stories the general public can understand. Ability to reach across departments or disciplines in a collaborative manner. Ability to identify stories and research that can have major impact. Ability to identify areas of cross-promotion.

About the Office

The Office of Communications enthusiastically promotes the research, accolades, and activities of the Tickle College of Engineering and its students, faculty, and staff to internal and external stakeholders through a variety of communications channels.

The office maintains the college website at, manages the college’s social media presence, annually produces two college and multiple departmental alumni print magazines, supports college outreach events, writes and distributes news to internal and external audiences, and assists engineering units with developing and implementing a wide variety of strategic communication pieces to further the mission and vision of the college and university.
