Position Details:

Summary of Duties: This position is in the Department of Plant Pathology. The position will involve studying races of the Columbia root-knot nematode and plant immune responses to nematode infections at the molecular level, with a focus on novel M. chitwoodi effectors. Position responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to the following: 1) Assist in planning and performing nematode bioassays in potatoes, tomatoes and Arabidopsis; 2) Conduct greenhouse and laboratory research on plants infected with root-knot nematodes under different plant growing conditions; 4) Evaluate gene expression analyses and confidently perform other molecular assays with nematodes and plants; 5) Tabulate, collate, summarize, and analyze data and maintain records; and 6) Prepare verbal and written reports of results to supervisor for review and use.

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in plant pathology, plant science, or a related discipline.
  • prior experience in molecular laboratory research in plants or nematodes
  • a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • proven ability to work independently and to work in teams
  • a demonstrated ability to function with minimal supervision


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A working knowledge of computer programs, including R or related programs for transcriptome and genome analyses.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
