Wellness & Recreation Services has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Executive Director of the Wellness Center position.

The CU Denver Wellness Center:
The CU Denver Student Wellness Center (SWC) is the centerpiece for student life at the campus. While many students nationwide make their campuses their home, many of the students at CU Denver need a home away from home. A place where they can study, connect with others, learn, eat, exercise, recreate, build community, and develop their identities. The Lola & Rob Salazar Student Wellness Center brings facilities, services and programs to life around the seven dimensions of wellness: environmental, physical, emotional, spiritual, social, financial, and creative. These dimensions are integrated into both the architecture and programming of the building, allowing students to practice holistic wellness during their time at CU Denver.  As a project rooted in resolving student needs, CU Denver students will always be at the forefront of programmatic development and practice.

Nature of Work 
The Executive Director is responsible for planning, developing, executing, and evaluating facilities, business operations, programs and services which support the educational, wellness, and recreational needs of the CU Denver community. This is a highly responsible leadership position in charge of the administration and operation of Wellness & Recreation Services (WRS) which is an auxiliary entity housed in the Lola & Rob Salazar Student Wellness Center (SWC). The SWC opened in 2018 in downtown Denver. The 85,000 square foot innovative and holistic wellness-focused facility serves the needs of students, faculty, staff and alumni of CU Denver. The department of Wellness & Recreation Services operates in an integrated manner focusing on operational effectiveness. The Executive Director is responsible for planning, developing, executing, and evaluating facilities, business operations, programs and services which support the educational, wellness, and recreational needs of the CU Denver community. 

The Executive Director is responsible for leadership and management of the highly integrated Wellness & Recreation Services auxiliary unit including(1) creating and carrying out strategic planning in alignment with university priorities and student needs; (2) internal and external policy, (3) financial operations and budgetary planning; (4) physical facility plant operations, management and scheduling; (5) management of human resources; (6) business management, contract and service negotiations; (7) delivery of quality services; (8) advocacy for equity, diversity and inclusion; (8) maintaining protocol to ensure risk mitigation, health and safety standards; (10) promoting accessibility and connection for the diverse needs of the CU Denver student body; (11) membership management and marketing; (12) internal and external special events management; (13) establishing cross campus collaboration; and (14) university and departmental representation in matters related to wellness and recreation. 

The Executive Director will supervise professional staff. The current organization chart includes 15 professional staff and approximately 100 part-time student staff. The WRS portfolio contains units focused on facilities, operations & maintenance, marketing & membership, aquatics, outdoor adventure, competitive sports, fitness, health promotion, and basic needs programming and promotion. Wellness & Recreation Services is a major unit within Student Affairs and reports administratively to the Assistant Vice Chancellor Health & Wellness.

Supervision Received: Wellness & Recreation Services is organized within Strategic Enrollment and Student Success reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health, Wellness, Advocacy and Support.

Supervision Exercised: Responsible for supervising multiple professional staff (classified and unclassified), part time contractual staff, graduate and undergraduate students.

Nature of Work:

  • Responsible for leading the entire department of Wellness & Recreation Services to include physical plant management of the 85,000 square foot Lola & Rob Salazar Student Wellness Center.  
  • Expertise in budgeting, planning and strategic decision-making. 
  • Create and maintain a welcoming environment focused on inclusion and support of the health and wellness of users and the campus population. 
  • Ensure a high level of customer service, safety, inclusiveness, collaboration, and student focus.
  • Directs the overall operations of Wellness & Recreation Services / Salazar Student Wellness Center
  • Leads departmental strategic planning efforts
  • Provides leadership and vision for integrated, comprehensive and holistic wellness-focused operations and services that enhance the development of CU Denver students.
  • Manage portfolio that contains facility management, business management aquatics, outdoor adventure, fitness, health promotion, financial wellness, basic needs and competitive sports. 
Human Resources:

  • Lead, mentor, motivate, and evaluate the entire staffing team including full-time staff and student employees - Approximately 120 full and part-time staff. 
  • Provide developmental opportunities for staff.
  • Oversee student staff development opportunities: LeadWELL leadership course, student staff retreats, student staff training and certification.
Fiscal Management:

  • Develop and manage a departmental operating budget of over $4 million in accordance with university and departmental policies. Plan, research, and execute the purchase of equipment and supplies.
  • Plans for short-term, mid-range and long-range capital improvements and budget needs
  • Oversees assets of department and facility
  • Evaluate and maintain consistent and equitable fee structures for programs and services. 
  • Lead and manage annual, department-wide budgetary preparation processes
  • Strategize and accurately forecast long-range budget planning (student fees, gift funds, revenue opportunities, cost reduction).
  • Oversight of departmental procurement processes. 
Facility Management: 

  • Collaborates with university facilities management and Assistant Director of Facilities to ensure maintenance of large facility operating systems. 
  • This includes the:
  • Management and oversight of contract services to include but not limited to aquatics service, equipment maintenance, consumable goods, vending. 
  • Management of revenue based special events and facility reservation program.
  • Oversight of internal custodial, laundry and maintenance services
  • Collects and maintains user data to demonstrate usage and make decisions.
  • Ensure industry standards are met for plant management, health, safety, programmatic offerings, and professional liabilities. 
  • Develop and implement risk management policies and procedures including staff training and preparedness evaluation systems.
  • Promote the awareness of Wellness and Recreation Services by overseeing a multi-faceted marketing plan, departmental publications, social media and web presence. Maintain on-going communication and collaboration with CU Denver faculty, staff and students.
  • Identify, implement, and report appropriate assessments.
  • Oversee implementation of university-wide assessments (NCHA).
  • Oversee health and safety education program for university community: CPR/AED training, lifeguard training, swim lessons. 
  • Serves on the Health & Wellness leadership team and other university committees as needed.
  • Respond to emergency situations, injuries, and complex situations.
  • This position is a Campus Security Authority (CSA)/Mandatory Reporter.
PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring range for this position has been established at $95,000 to $108,000.   

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in recreation administration, sports management, kinesiology, physical education, or a related field.
  • This position requires extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience, including direct responsibility for Recreation/Wellness Program Operations.
  • Experience serving the health and wellness needs of diverse populations.
Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Conditions of Employment: Must be willing and able to...

  • Some weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Serves on-call for Wellness & Recreation Services.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in recreation administration, higher education administration, public administration, or business administration.
  • Experience managing people, programs, and operations within a higher education setting.
  • Experience maintaining wellness, recreation, and fitness facilities.
  • Experience providing wellness and recreation opportunities on an urban, commuter campus.

  • The Executive Director possesses strong leadership, judgment, managerial, organizational, interpersonal, and motivational skills.  
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in strategic planning, assessment, and student learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of physical plant systems and building maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct complex student recreation centers in a college or university environment.
  • Some knowledge of principles and practices of accounting, finance, and business management.

  • Demonstrated ability to be able to establish and maintain working relationships with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, and general public.
