Our mission is to provide information technology leadership, services, and innovative solutions to promote the research, education and community service goals of the University. The OIT Database Administration Team is responsible for the deployment, ongoing maintenance, support, security and availability of databases for campus systems. Under direction of the Manager, Database Management, the Senior Database Administrator position applies advanced database administration concepts and campus objectives to support highly complex, heterogeneous mission critical database systems. Assesses business needs and technical considerations with minimal direction in order to complete database administration projects of advanced scope and complexity. Selects methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results. Implements database solutions from evaluation to implementation of large enterprise level hardware and software. Candidate will work in a highly complex technical environment that requires expert knowledge of MySQL and also preferably advanced Oracle database administration skills. Candidate will use advanced database knowledge to work with system administrators to establish optimal operating system, database and network parameters for campus database systems and also will provide advanced technical assistance to application development groups. Leads large, highly complex database migrations and projects of advanced scope and complexity that span many months. Candidate has responsibility for capacity planning and disaster recovery for campus-wide mission critical large databases.   • Five (5)+ years' experience in MySQL Database Administration. Prefer three (3)+ years of Oracle Database Administration experience.
  • Five (5) plus years with BA/BS OR three (3) to five years with MA/MS or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of MySQL 5.7/8 database administration concepts and architecture.
  • Ability to install/upgrade MySQL in Oracle Linux 7 and above.
  • Strong skills writing and maintaining custom shell scripts in Oracle Linux V7 environment and above.
  • High proficiency in SQL for MySQL.
  • Should be able to understand and troubleshoot any SQL performance issues.
  • Significant experience with performance tuning, troubleshooting, capacity planning and optimization of MySQL environment.
  • Strong skills and experience working with MySQL Support to do troubleshooting and resolution of MySQL database problems.
  • Skills associated with implementing database enhancements that improve performance and reliability of the system at the software, hardware and operating system level.
  • Advanced knowledge of MySQL InnoDB High Availability cluster configuration with 3-5 node cluster, including troubleshooting if needed.
  • Strong knowledge of configuring MySQL source/target environment for database replication and data preservation.
  • Proficiency in patching/upgrading MySQL including doing so while maintaining database uptime in High Availability InnoDB cluster or with minimum downtime for source/target replication.
  • Strong knowledge of backup/restore steps in InnoDB and MyISAM environments.
  • Be able to perform point in time recovery.
  • Advanced knowledge of MySQL monitoring tools and configuring alerts for any issues.
  • Demonstrates good judgment and decision-making; problem identification and resolution; identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve MySQL performance through database configuration and programming techniques.
  • Demonstrates reasoning and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Skills necessary to develop procedures and standards relating to database management systems.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, service orientation, active listening, effective verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills.
  • Able to multi-task and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to work independently on complex technical projects as well as on a team of technical professionals and relevant decision-makers.
  • Strong security skills for protecting the operating system, software, data and hardware.
  • Technical skills to develop, implement and test disaster recovery functions using data replication and/or backup technologies.

Preferred:
  • Experience securing MySQL 8 databases using recommendations in CIS benchmarks.
  • Implementation of Transparent Data Encryption for MySQL database tables.
  • Strong knowledge of using MySQL router and implementing this for MySQL InnoDB Clustering to implement High Availability for campus systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of Oracle 12/19c database administration concepts and architecture.
  • Significant experience with Oracle database administration, performance tuning, troubleshooting, capacity planning and optimization of Oracle environment.
  • DataGuard implementation of Oracle disaster recovery databases.
  • Experience with administering databases running on Oracle Database Appliances.
Special Conditions Required: May be required to work evenings/weekends as needed to apply system patches or upgrade databases. Position qualifies to work fully remote. If candidate is in local area, may require occasional meetings on campus. Final candidate subject to background check.
