Position Summary

Under the moderate supervision of the Department Director or designee, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Business Consultant I effectively provides business counseling to SBDC clients; including business plan development, coordination with lenders and/or investors, and preparing and analyzing business financial statements/reports. This position requires previous training, experience, and specific skills. The incumbent performs work with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

This position is part-time. 32 hours per week, Monday -Thursday; some Fridays; evenings required on a regular basis.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide services assessing the viability and needs of small business clients
  • Development and monitoring of progress of client action plans
  • Provides one-on-one counseling services to future and current business owners
  • Conducts assessments to assist business owners in identifying their strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities
  • Assists business owners in updating business plans, strategies, and options
  • Conducts market research
  • Provides technical assistance to business owners in researching their options and applying for resources
  • Designs and conducts entrepreneurial training workshops
  • Ensures that instructional materials are appropriate and in sufficient supply for training events
  • Coordinates the involvement of guest speakers and/or subject matter experts for needed training
  • Promotes upcoming training opportunities to new and existing clients
  • Responsible for visiting and establishing relationships with business owners and community stakeholders, small business resource entities and industry specialists
  • Pursues relationships within the area that promote the SBDC programs, services, seminars and training events in the Southern Maryland business community
  • Interact with other business assistance resource groups including county economic development departments, Maryland Dept. of Business and Economic Development, local Chambers of Commerce and SBA resource partners
  • Participates in SBDC local and statewide events and training activities
  • Client entries into MD SBDC case management system that monitors and tracks participant progress and provides periodic reports
  • Establishes an inventory and/or directory of local business resources
  • Attend established meetings
  • Management and monitoring of annual performance milestones to ensure they are met
  • Routinely obtain client success stories and legislative letters as required by Maryland SBDC network.

    Additional Duties:

  • Performs other related work as required Minimum Education and Training
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, management or related field
  • Two years business consulting or equivalent experience of 5 or more years business ownership Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to provide financial advice and assist clients in obtaining financing.
  • Knowledge of public and private loan programs.
  • Ability to analyze sensitive and comprehensive financial statements.
  • Excellent written and oral skills.
  • Maintenance of insurability under the college's vehicle liability insurance plan.

    Physical Requirements:

    The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly.
