JOB SUMMARY

This position will report to the Office for Diversity and Inclusion and serve as a consultative member of the Division of University Safety’s leadership team to support and advance diversity and inclusion within the Division. The DEI Consultant will be responsible for identifying and creating areas for meaningful dialogue, forming and supporting partnerships between the Division and the many UConn communities, and addressing diversity and inclusion concerns that emerge. The position will also offer diversity training, build cultural competence for the Division, and support efforts to diversify its workforce.

The Division of University Safety includes the Police Department, the Fire Department, the Office of Emergency Management, the Fire Marshal and Building Inspector’s Office, Emergency Communications Center, and the Department of Environmental Health and Safety.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as a consultative advisor establishing and facilitating credible, open, cooperative, and collaborative dialogues, connections, and relationships between the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, the Division of University Safety, the University community (Offices and Divisions such as Student Affairs, the Office of the Provost, etc. and University students), and the public.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert providing coaching, education, and recommendations to the Division of University Safety. Regularly assesses the Division’s work, including its policies, practices, procedures, training, communications, and standards, to help enhance, develop, plan, integrate, and implement diversity, equity, and inclusion goals and strategies. Identifies and champions strategic diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, objectives, and priorities for the Division of University Safety and works to translate strategies into practical and actionable solutions. Likewise, it identifies barriers that inhibit the fulfillment of these priorities and supports the adoption of effective solutions.
  • Develops, coordinates, implements, administers, and actively engages in a broad range of diversity, equity, and inclusion activities, trainings, leadership development, and other programming designed to educate, inform, and foster and maintain a more knowledgeable and inclusive environment. Topics may include effective communication, procedural justice, implicit bias, and cultural sensitivity among other related areas.
  • Develops feedback mechanisms, surveys, and other means to analyze, evaluate and improve the effectiveness and impact of training, activities, and other work.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Human Resources, supports institutional efforts to recruit and retain a diverse workforce for the Division of University Safety.
  • Works with the Office of Labor Relations and Division leadership to use incidents as moments of opportunity to move diversity, equity, and inclusion work forward.
  • Improves community outreach, focusing on engaging the community with open and meaningful dialogues and education.
  • Works with community partners to ensure that campus concerns are appropriately communicated.
  • Maintains knowledge of contemporary diversity, equity, and inclusion-related issues, operations, and strategies to ensure that the Division of University Safety’s actions and values reflect diversity and inclusion best practices.
  • Remains actively engaged in day-to-day activities in both the Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Division of University Safety.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 4-6 years of diversity, equity, and inclusion experience.
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion experience requiring supervisory and managerial experience.
  • Experience evaluating, assessing, and reporting on DEI program effectiveness through the use of appropriate metrics.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and facilitating diversity and inclusion trainings and programs for a variety of constituencies.
  • Experience identifying the needs of a variety of constituencies and adopting effective solutions.
  • Demonstrate project management, organization, and analytical experience.
  • Experience working collaboratively with a variety of constituencies and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated excellent written communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree.
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion experience requiring supervisory or managerial experience.
  • Three or more years of higher education experience.
  • Experience working with University Safety and Campus Police departments while representing the interests and well-being of the University community.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.
  • Experience in human resources management/employee engagement.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in influencing decision-making with leadership/management.
  • Experience in implementing strategic programs, initiatives, and trainings that lead to culture/climate change.
