Duties/Responsibilities:

Provide counseling services to individual student-athletes, including evaluation, treatment planning, progress monitoring, re-evaluation, and possible referral:

  • General clinical responsibilities such as writing clinical intakes, treatment planning, psychotherapy, clinical evaluation, triage.
  • Assessing appropriateness for care, referral to higher level of care when indicated.
  • Provide evaluations, crisis interventions, and brief psychotherapies with a wide range of patients (individuals and groups) within the athletic department.
  • Engage in counseling-related activities including, but not limited to, maintaining counseling records, referrals, and managing various organizational and administrative aspects of counseling cases. Provide daytime, evening, and weekend crisis intervention and emergency services in situations involving individual student-athletes or teams.
  • In collaboration with Assistant AD of Mental Health and Performance, provide consulting and outreach services to coaches, athletic trainers, and other administrative personnel regarding the psychological well-being of individual student-athletes and teams.
  • Communicates with appropriate university administrators and various mental health and medical professionals regarding clinical services and/or patient care.
  • Coordinate delivery of substance use education and treatment. Assist the academic support staff, as requested with LD/ADHD assessments.

Sport Performance and Mental Skills Training to help athletes and teams enhance their sport performance, mental skills, team culture, leadership, and successfully manage pressures of their sport. Under the supervision of the Assistant AD of Mental Health and Performance:

  • Assist student-athletes with the cognitive and emotional aspects of athletic performance, conflict resolution, motivation, recovery from injury, and team building.
  • Understand and comply with state statutes governing the ethical provision of psychological care, as well as those rules governing the NCAA and Southeastern conferences.
  • Responsible for keeping abreast of current trends and developments in the field through publications, seminars, and conferences.

  • Attend weekly Mental Health and Performance Staff meetings and other athletics association meetings.

Position Summary:

Serving as a member of the UGAAA Mental Health & Performance (MH&P) team, the position will provide individual psychotherapy, crisis intervention, performance enhancement sessions, and interdisciplinary treatment team consultation services. Other responsibilities include assisting with programming and team performance enhancement facilitation and training. The postdoctoral fellow will work under the supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director of Mental Health & Performance and in conjunction with sports medicine, referring physicians, other ancillary medical professionals, and UGAAA staff (athletic administration, athletic coaching, athletic training, academics, strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, counseling/psychology clinicians. Supervision for credentialing as an Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) can be provided.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical psychology, preferably from an APA-accredited program and have completed pre-doctoral internship. Strong clinical skills and experience are preferred, as this position is primarily clinical in nature providing mental health services to our student-athletes. Previous training in sport psychology, mental skills training, and/or performance enhancement.

Applicants will demonstrate an interest in sport performance and/or academic training in sport psychology. Other important skill sets include organization, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple professional boundaries, openness to feedback, and ability to work both autonomously and as part of an integrated, interdisciplinary team. Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Stand; walk; use hands and reach with arms; hear. Occasionally sit and talk. Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision, and peripheral vision.
