Office of Academic Achievement & Student Success has an opening for two full-time University Staff (unclassified) Student Success Coach position.

Position Emphasis:
The Student Success Coach is responsible for proactively interacting with targeted student populations with the intention of improving persistence, completion, and time-to-degree for CU Denver students. Working with the Director of Student Success Initiatives to develop best practices and adopt industry standards for group coaching sessions and individual sessions, the Student Success Coach is part of a broader ecosystem of student support services (i.e., navigators, advisors, mentors).  Student Success Coaches provide holistic support using principles of equity-focused coaching/advising to facilitate personal and academic success with the intention to help students develop and build strengths and to determine what it takes to be a successful student. They meet with students in individual and group sessions to help them develop broad-level skills, habits, and knowledge that contribute to success in college by addressing both their academic and personal needs. The coach is responsible for evaluating and assessing a student’s need to create an individual academic success plan. 

The coach improves a student’s college experience as a liaison to student service areas, this includes referring students to additional campus departments and resources.  The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of holistic coaching/advising practices, academic support interventions, student services, and the institutional landscape. The Student Success Coach will need to have a wealth of knowledge of various student services across campus 

Supervision Received: The Student Success Coach reports to the Director for Student Success Initiatives.  

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Foster student persistence and completion by maintaining an assigned caseload of students who receive individual and/or group coaching sessions.
  • Create coaching group sessions based on perceived need across campus and in collaboration with student success units upon request.
  • Provide goal-oriented coaching that helps students develop strategies for academic success, academic skills, and self-efficacy.
  • Coaches will conduct an analysis of student contact and progression to determine if students are meeting certain benchmarks that have been established through their coaching sessions.
  • Utilize in-depth knowledge of academic departments, student services, and administrative processes to holistically assist students with challenges they face.
  • Proactively engage students about matters of program completion (academic progression).
  • Need to understand and have the ability to assess when a student would require a referral to case management.
  • Develop individual academic success plans to include goal setting, learning strategies, time management, organization, study skills, and stress management.
  • Utilize student success data through Civitas to create a target audience of students to engage.
  • Create an open and honest dialogue with students about previous academic success and difficulties.
  • Ask powerful questions to encourage student reflection and thought.
  • Assist students in creating goals and developing student success skills.
  • Talk with students about academic progress in courses and identify strategies for improvement.
  • Are available to answer questions and meet with students.
  • Connect students to faculty, campus support staff, and resources.
  • Develop an ongoing relationship and work cooperatively with advising offices, learning support areas, student transitions, financial aid, registrar, and other areas key to student success. 
  • Connect with students who have been referred for coaching through the Early Action referral process. 
  • Take referrals from advising units, academic units, Learning Resources Center, and other campus partners. 
  • Provide on-call coaching by referral of Lynx Central through appointment based and walk-up services.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring range for this position has been established at $48,701 to $60,000   

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis, but not for the specific experience.
  • Two (2) years of professional student services experience.
Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) or more years of student services experience.
  • Coaching credential focused on development.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish/English preferred).
  • Experience working in higher education in either advising, admissions, financial aid, or career services preferred.
  • Experience working with a customer relationship management (CRM) system, such as Salesforce or Slate or student information systems Navigate.

  • Analytical Skills - Ability to interpret complex information and using it to inform decision making.
  • Attention to Detail – Excellent attention to detail and ability to interpret and master complex information
  • Communication Skills - Good command of the English language, and ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal.
  • Interpersonal Skills – Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels; interacts with people in a friendly, open, honest manner; models a commitment to teamwork; demonstrates respect for the opinions of others; and maintains high level of confidentiality.
  • Customer Service – Demonstrates a commitment to excellent customer service, providing internal and external customers with information or assistance in resolving problems.
  • Adaptability – Adapts quickly to change and can manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a calm, organized manner; is open to new ideas and methods; is able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Planning and Organizing – Sets priorities, anticipates obstacles when planning, manages time effectively to accomplish tasks.
  • Technical Skills – Adept at utilizing technology to effectively communicate and complete work (e.g. MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Teams, CRM, SIS); ability to learn new technology.
