Teaching, Leadership and Professional Practice Department Chair, Associate or Full Professor

The College of Education and Human Development at the University of North Dakota invites applications for Department Chair in the Department of Teaching, Leadership and Professional Practice (TLPP). We are seeking an established teacher and researcher from any Education-related specialization to fill a key leadership position. Subject to approval by the University and State Board of Higher Education, this is a tenured position, and an appointment will be made at a rank consistent with experience and qualifications. Successful candidates will have qualifications consistent with the rank of Full or Associate Professor.

The Department is specifically seeking an innovative, invested, and supportive leader who is well-equipped to apply interdisciplinary perspectives to the critical issues facing education today, especially those in rural schools. This leader will collaborate with the faculty, students, staff, alumni, and partners of the Department to create meaningful, equitable, and inclusive experiences for all and to strengthen partnerships throughout the region, state and across the nation. By working closely with the Dean and colleagues across campus and in the community, the next Chair will strive to expand our influence, improve our practices, and help shape the future of Pk-12 preparation and education.

Our undergraduate, CAEP-accredited programs in Teacher Education prepare teachers across the P-12 range in multiple content areas, including Indigenous Teacher Education. This position is a 12-month appointment, with Summer commitment to be negotiated. The Department Chair is supported by an Associate Chair as well as departmental and college staff. 

Primary Leadership Duties:

    Serve as chief administrator responsible for the department and its programs, as well as ensuring that the teaching, scholarship, and service missions of the department, college, and institution are carried out with integrity Exemplify the value of inclusiveness, multicultural competencies, and social justice Represent the department to internal and external constituents, including assisting with fundraising when requested by the DeanCollaborate with the Dean on planning and executing college and department strategic initiatives and operationalizing department MOUs, contracts, and agreementsExercise leadership in the recruiting, hiring, retaining, and rewarding of faculty and staffFoster effective interaction and collegiality between administrators, faculty, staff, and students Design and implement a plan for selecting and providing mentors for new faculty and staffManage the department's budgetsConduct department meetings Manage academic functions, including course schedules, curriculum processes, program coordination, and communicationMonitor the quality of teaching by all persons with instructional responsibilitiesAdminister the department's faculty and staff evaluation policiesMake recommendations on tenure, promotion, and compensationProvide for and support the ongoing evaluation of the curriculum and the assessment of student learning as aligned to CAEP and other program standardsAssist with recruitment of students and provide for appropriate student advisement Promote, support, and approve faculty efforts in grant writing and external funding activitiesMaintain an active discipline-specific research agendaMay teach one course each fall and/or spring semester Performs additional duties assigned by the Dean

Minimum Requirements
    Doctorate in teacher education, educational leadership, or closely related fieldEarned tenure at previous college/university Demonstrated a minimum of three (3) years successful experience as a college/university faculty member Experience with planning comprehensive initiatives, implementing strategic plans, and allocating resources Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, social justice, interdisciplinary work, educational innovations, and collegial leadershipSuccessful completion of criminal history records check

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. 

Preferred Qualifications
    Evidence of exemplary scholarly activity, publication, and innovation Demonstrated at least three (3) years of experience leading an academic unit or program Demonstrated at least three (3) years successful licensed teaching experience in an accredited Pk-12 school setting Demonstrated at least three (3) years of experience as an administrator in an accredited Pk-12 school setting, district office, or state-level institution Experience with Pk-12 teacher preparation and licensure /credentialing Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching experience Evidence of exemplary service, especially with rural partnerships
Minimum Hiring Salary

Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience and rank

Contract Period/Start Date

12 month contract. Ideally, the next TLPP Deparment Chair will begin on or before Fall 2023.
