Sr. Programmer Analyst
Johns Hopkins University Press seeks a Senior Programmer Analyst to join a team of exceptional professionals committed to bringing the benefits of discovery to the world by providing global access, impact, and influence for the scholarship that we publish and distribute. This position will help to ensure that the Press is a leader in the selection and development of innovative ideas and scholarship; the creation of pioneering technologies to enhance discovery and learning; and the connection of people to the most trusted knowledge from global researchers, scholars, and educators.

Project MUSE is a division of The Johns Hopkins University Press. For over 25 years, the Project MUSE platform has been the trusted and reliable source of complete, full-text versions of scholarly journals from many of the world's leading universities and scholarly societies. Currently, Project MUSE hosts more than 700 journals from 125 publishers. In 2012, scholarly books were added to the platform, with more than 70,000 books from not-for-profit presses now available.

Thousands of libraries worldwide acquire content from the MUSE platform to serve the research and instructional needs of their faculty, staff, and students. A variety of purchase and subscription options are offered to institutional customers, along with selected article purchasing for individual users, and a large body of content that is freely available to all under newly-emerging “open access” arrangements.

The Senior Programmer Analyst is a member of Project MUSE's technical development team involved in software and database development. The position works with a small talented team who continues to output and design innovative publishing features in record time, with the quality and depth of a large organization. Project MUSE has thrived on creating custom solutions, offering flexibility to both the product and the customer. This position will report to the Director, Publishing Technologies at Project MUSE. This position reports to the Director of Publishing Technologies - Project MUSE.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Develops or modifies computer programs; develops test plans and performs unit, system and integrated testing for individual assignments, and or vendor software releases.
  • Database design, development and implementation, including user and system requirements collection, proto-typing and testing, application database schemes design and integration with applications, production maintenance and user support.
  • Develops, maintains, documents and tests new or existing programs.
  • Adheres to project wide standards for data collection/storage, structured programming techniques, documentation requirements, testing, reporting, software/hardware releases.
  • Uses programming knowledge and critical thinking to resolve moderately complex technical or procedural problems.
  • Create reports and work with end users on report specifications; create and run queries as needed, both scripted and ad hoc.
  • Recognize project roadblocks and work with the project team to define and implement solutions.
  • Advise managers, directors, and executives on gaps and opportunities for systems or process improvements.
  • Participates in institutional-level information technology initiatives as assigned.

  • Manage several projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines.

  • Ability to work on a team, set priorities, work under pressure, adapt to demanding situations, and maintain schedules.

  • Weave equity, justice, and inclusion principles into all aspects of the work.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree and three years related experience required.
  • Expert experience with Web programming using Perl, CGI/Mod Perl and or Python is required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education.*
  • Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience.


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Experience with MySQL.
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript, (eg. JQuery), HTML, CSS is desirable.
  • Experience and or knowledge with XML and or XSLT would be a plus.
  • Working environment is UNIX.
  • Publishing Experience a bonus.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain confidentiality, and always have a customer service-oriented, “can do,” problem-solving attitude.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
