SUMMARY:

Attaining College Entry and Success is a US Department of Education grant funded program. The program will follow sixty high school students from their senior year through their sophomore year in college at Texas A&M University Commerce. The ACES College advisor mentor will teach/implement the work-based learning course along with implementation of grant activities including designing and organizing the PACC fairs and career exploration trips/immersion.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Advises ACES students concerning their career goals and academic requirements.
  • Provides information on and refers students to university resources that can assist in meeting their needs or solving problems
  • Teaches the ACES work-based curriculum course on the campus of Commerce and Community High Schools
  • Collects required ACES data for grant evaluators.
  • Organizes and leads the work-based immersion summer trips, intermediary and sustainability meetings
  • Works with ACES signature course and advises the ACES living and learning community
  • Provides academic advice and guidance to students on major/degree selection, academic schedules, course schedules, and course planning and provides input on probationary status decisions.
  • Refers enrolled ACES students to resources/grant team pertaining to college admissions, professional concerns, housing, student financial aid, student services/counseling, academic preparation, time management skills, handling test anxiety, and study skills.
  • Responds to inquiries from students and parents. Serves as a liaison between colleges and other University offices regarding admissions, registration, advising, and counseling.
  • Meets with ACES students during orientation and directs/connects students who need assistance to the grant team members and correct departments for financial aid, billing, housing, textbooks, and healthcare. Assists with family visits and group tours.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with ACES grant team members, ACES students, and campus employees.
  • Participates in System, College, and ACES events, activities, and programs (i.e., orientation, career/ immersion camps, workshops, diversity trainings, seminars, symposiums, conferences, etc.). Develops, organizes, and oversees coordination of ACES events.
  • Maintains records of ACES student contacts and prepares various ACES reports.
  • Develops and revises informational material, handbooks, and newsletters. Visits high schools to present and distribute information concerning University programs and opportunities. Communicates with high schools and community colleges to identify students for recruitment. Participates in various recruitment programs.
  • Organizes the ACES advisory council including setting meeting and agendas; follow-up up with needed action items

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Prior experience not required.
  • Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends. Ability to travel.
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications: Valid driver’s license.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to move light objects

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior academic advising or teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and courses in the high school/college and core classes across the campus.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
