Position Summary

Coconino Community College (CCC) is located on land sacred to many indigenous peoples, and CCC serves students from the Diné, Hopi, Paiute, Havasupai, Apache, Yavapai, and other tribal nations. As a Native American-Serving Nontribal Institution, CCC recently secured a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to enhance support for Native American students. The Strengthening Indigenous Student Success (SISS) Retention Advisor assists the Program Coordinator in the management of the grant-funded Strengthening Indigenous Student Success project. This position will be located on the Page Center in Page, AZ. This position is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the SISS Program Coordinator in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the program. This includes developing, monitoring and approving budgetary expenditures and allocating human and fiscal resources to the program and related activities.
  • Assists in measuring the performance of the program and takes corrective action when necessary. This includes conducting and analyzing surveys to improve program efficiency and evaluating progress toward goals and objectives.
  • Markets the program to students and tribal communities and conducts student outreach efforts.
  • Assists the SISS Program Coordinator in the creation and management of a Native American Student Success Center on the Page Campus.
  • Assists the SISS Program Coordinator in the development and management of program activities including orientation, summer bridge, peer mentoring, tutoring, field trips and other retention programs designed for Native American learners.
  • Advises program participants over the entire College district involving personal and educational issues related to their academic and life goals. Determines or develops a specific course of action, or makes recommendations or referrals to internal programs and outside agencies if required.

  • Gathers data and maintains confidential files of program participants. Uses this data to prepare reports and written narratives according to grant requirements.
  • Provides academic and career advisement to program participants.
  • Assists students with applying for financial aid, tribal scholarships and other grants.
  • Assists in the development and management of a New Student Orientation track for Native American students and their families.
  • Creates and presents degree/career exploration and tribal scholarship workshops for Native American students.
  • Monitors participants’ progress within a particular educational program and formulates academic plans in Degree Works audit software.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge about the college’s programs and requirements; utilizes articulation software from transfer institutions regarding course and program transferability, admissions and graduation requirements.
  • Informs students about alternatives, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions (e.g. adding, dropping and withdrawing from courses, change of program, major and/or transfer institution).
  • Provides career advising expertise to students regarding the job search process, interviewing, resume, and all other facets of career planning.
  • Provides unofficial evaluation of transfer transcripts from other academic institutions for possible application to CCC degree programs.
  • Serves as a liaison to external departments, groups, and agencies. Serves on internal committees.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of Native American and first-generation college student issues, student development, career development, academic advising and retention issues in higher education. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with groups and individuals of differing cultural or socio-economic backgrounds. Teaching and presenting experience to high school and adult learners. Experience with curriculum and academic services development. Strong written, verbal, analytical and organizational skills. Working knowledge in Microsoft Suite; knowledge in Banner student information system and DegreeWorks audit software is preferred. Ability to operate standard office equipment.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in education, psychology or related field, and two years of directly related experience in student services, academic advising, or related field within a higher education setting; or any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Experience with grant funded programs. Experience working with Native American student populations.

    Preferred

    Master's degree in Student Services, Cultural Studies, Bilingual Education, or a related field is preferred. Proven successful experience working with a diverse population. Experience with tracking systems for monitoring student progress and program requirement compliance. Experience working with culturally diverse students. Experience with student activities and leadership development programs. Experience with retention programs. Fluency in language of one or more local tribal groups (Diné [Navajo], Hopi, Paiute, Havasupai, Hualapai, Apache, Yavapai, etc.).
