Department Summary & Job Purpose:

The Director of Community Engagement and the Community Based Learning Program leads a wide variety of experiential learning, co-curricular, programmatic, and curricular initiatives, all of which are related to community engagement at Mount Holyoke College. Mount Holyoke’s strategic planning and learning goals include cultivating distinctiveness related to experiential learning, providing students with unique opportunities for leadership development, and integrating academic excellence and off campus experience in ways that are inclusive and truly collaborative. The CBL and Community Engagement Program is central to attaining these goals and therefore to the academic mission of the college. Mount Holyoke’s CBL Program has been recognized with a Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, an Excelencia in Latino Education award, and Newman Civic Scholar awards. Our place on Princeton Review’s top 25 colleges for making an impact also highlights the CBL Program’s community engagement. Therefore, the Director is expected to sustain and extend this reputation, and will be the public face of the CBL Program in much of our externally facing work.


Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Maintaining and further developing an integrated community engagement strategy for Mount Holyoke College.
  • Maintaining current relationships with community partners and organizations in Holyoke and other neighboring communities. Currently, the CBL program has ongoing vital partnerships with approximately 10 community partners, engaging in work ranging from providing over 30 tutors to Homework House to placing individual CBL Student Fellows with smaller community organizations. As we enter a new phase of the Covid pandemic, the Director will be able to cultivate new collaborations and new projects with local community partners.
  • Overseeing off-campus student employment for all students working through CBL. This work will include ensuring federal work study opportunities for Mount Holyoke students and maintaining compliance related to FWS and work-study employment.
  • Ensuring compliance and appropriate risk management policies for all students working through CBL. The CBL program faces a complex set of risk management and liability needs for students who work off campus, and the Director must set policy and make crucial decisions ensuring the safety of our students and of those members of local communities, in particular youth who receive America Reads/America Counts tutoring, with whom our students work.
  • Attending important committees that are relevant for the ongoing work of the CBL program, including ALAB, monthly America Reads America Counts meetings, and the Five College Community Based Learning committee. In addition, the Director may be asked to engage in collaboration with other key partners on campus such as the Divisions of Student Life, Student Success Initiatives, College Relations, and Diversity Equity and Inclusion.
  • Supporting faculty development for community engagement projects both for departments and for initiatives that exist across disciplines such as LYNK, Nexus, and Global-local.  Designing, in partnership with the Faculty Director of Community Engagement a series of events, ongoing education, workshops, and other programmatic opportunities for students engaged with the CBL program.
  • Supporting the Faculty Director by providing necessary resources and partnerships for CBL course mentors.
  • Providing mentoring and advising to a diverse community of CBL fellows.
  • Overseeing the budget for the CBL and Community Engagement program, in consultation with the Director of the Weissman Center for Leadership. In addition, to preparing an annual budget, maintaining constant fiscal responsibility, and making budgetary decisions about expenditures throughout the year, the Director will oversee the use of several restricted funds and report to donors annually.
  • Designing a communications strategy for the CBL program in collaboration with the Office of College Relations and the Director of the Weissman Center for Leadership.
  • Supervising, coordinating, and managing the work of the CBL team including a full time Assistant Director and a full-time Program Coordinator.

Qualifications: Bachelors Degree required.
5-7 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Masters degree preferred.
