Position Summary:

The development officer engages, cultivates, solicits, and stewards alumni, parents, and friends who have the capacity to make a gift of $50,000 or more to the University of Puget Sound. Working directly with colleagues in the offices of alumni relations, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, donor relations, and research, the development officer serves as a member of the capital giving team and reports to the assistant vice president for university relations.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Solicit alumni, parents, and friends for outright and irrevocable deferred endowment and facilities commitments of $50,000 or more for identified Puget Sound fundraising objectives;
  • Promote, discuss, illustrate and solicit planned giving opportunities with prospective donors, as appropriate;
  • Solicit gifts, as appropriate, for the Puget Sound Fund in coordination with colleagues in the Office of Annual Giving;
  • Meet regularly with prospective donors on and off campus to build enduring and trusting relationships between the prospects and the university;
  • Develop written engagement and solicitation strategies for all assigned prospects with capacity ratings of $100,000 or more;
  • Move prospective donors through the traditional cultivation and solicitation cycle with appropriate deliberate speed;
  • Document the results of all substantive contacts with constituents via contact reports; and
  • Represent the University of Puget Sound in a consistently professional and ethical manner.

Annual Development Officer Goals

Fundraising Goals

    Conduct 37 gift solicitations (25% of visit total) per year on average for outright or irrevocable deferred gifts (university-managed CGAs, CRTs, etc.) of $50,000 or more;Close 90% of solicitations through the receipt of a definitive response by the prospective donor;Secure written commitments for 10 outright or irrevocable deferred gifts or written commitments of $50,000 or more with the intent of generating $1.0 million or more in new outright and irrevocable deferred gifts;Secure 5 new or better documented paperwork for bequest or other deferred gift to benefit Puget Sound.

The assistant vice president for university relations will consider the status of each development officer’s portfolio annually during the performance appraisal period to determine if these goals should be adjusted based upon the development officer’s length of service at Puget Sound, the amount of time prospects have been in the development officer’s portfolio, and the cultivation statuses of the prospects.

Contact Goals

    Complete 150 planned contacts (90 percent of which will take the form of face-to-face visits) per year with assigned capital giving prospects. All contacts will serve to move potential donors closer to making a major commitment to the university or be related to stewardship after a commitment's documentation;Make a minimum of 750 documented contact attempts (e-mail, phone or text) to secure planned contacts with prospective donors;Make documented contact attempts for every prospect at least once each fiscal year for the purpose to schedule a planned contact;Make documented contact attempts with all newly assigned alumni prospects within 3 months of their assignment;Make documented contact attempts with all newly assigned parent prospects within 6 months of their assignment;Have a document visit with rated prospects by phone or in person with a cultivation level of “In Cultivation” or “In Stewardship” at least once every 24 months, if not more often.

Qualifications:

The development officer should possess the following qualifications and skills:

    Experience in fund raising, preferably at a liberal arts institution;A proven record of successful face-to-face gift solicitation;Significant experience working productively with alumni and parent volunteers;The ability to work and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a broad range of internal and external constituents including faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and friends of the university;The ability to work independently, solve problems, handle confidential information, and navigate sensitive situations;Highly developed computer skills including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as constituent relations software;The willingness and ability to travel frequently;Excellent organizational and planning skills as well as superior attentiveness to detail; A bachelor's degree.Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community

This Position: Requires the use/operation of a personal, rented, or university vehicle to conduct university business on a regular basis.

Compensation and Benefits: This position has a range between $70,000 annually - $83,000 annually. Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.
