Job Description:

Under supervision, the Sr. Maintenance Mechanic I (Stone Mason) performs a wide variety of journeyman level masonry work including the layout of jobs sufficiently complex to require advance planning, and the maintenance of necessary supplies and records. Work is performed with considerable independence but usually results from approved work orders or oral instructions. The Sr. Maintenance Mechanic I (Stone Mason) may work as part of a crew or as a lead worker on specific projects and may supervise a number of lower level maintenance and labor employees. Performs routine and emergency repairs and maintenance, both scheduled and in response to emergency situations, as required.

The journeyman is fully proficient in the skills and practices of the trade, with the full knowledge of the principles, tools and techniques. The journeyman has responsibility for determining methods, techniques, materials, and/or devices best suited to complete projects. Work at this grade is completed with little or no check during progress or on completion.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must possess a valid New York State driver's license and one of the following:

• A high school or equivalency diploma and four years of experience in the trade.
• Graduation from a pertinent high school level vocational program and 3 years of experience in the trade.
• Graduation from a 2 year post high school or trade school program and 2 years of experience in the trade.
• Six years work experience, four of which must have been in the trade.

The successful candidate must also have a thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques, methods and materials associated with the stone masonry trade; thorough knowledge of the accident and safety precautions of the trade; an ability to recognize and to recommend the need for stone masonry repairs and to make such repairs with a high degree of skill.

Depending on work assignment, the incumbent may be required to possess a CDL license. Depending on work assignment, the incumbent must also meet standards of OSHA regulation 1910.134 Respiratory Protection, and will be required to meet Federal, State and local standards with respect to health and safety.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The preferred qualifications are to follow:

• The ability to get along well with supervisors and employees; initiative in undertaking and completing assigned work; good judgment in determining the exact nature of the masonry repairs to be made.
• Physical strength and agility; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
• The ability to distinguish high grades from inferior grades of stone; ability to read blueprints, sketches, and drawings.
• Experience in carpentry.
• Experience in snow and ice control.

Additional Information:

SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $55,823 plus excellent benefits.
