Director of Development, Carey Business School
The Director of Development at the Carey Business School oversees the direct fundraising efforts of the school, including direct response appeals and portfolio-based gift officers. In addition, the Director of Development manages a personal portfolio of major gift prospects and will be expected to conduct a minimum of 75 cultivation and solicitation visits a year, including the preparation of written proposals. The Director of Development will need to work collaboratively across Johns Hopkins University. The Director of Development will also be expected to build strong relations with the Carey Business School's departments and faculty leadership and develop a substantive understanding of the Carey Business School's funding needs as defined by the Dean and Management Council.

The Director of Development will identify and evaluate the giving potential of high end affiliated and unaffiliated annual and major gift prospects through personal visits and research; and manage the cultivation and solicitation of planned giving prospects. The Director of Development primarily focuses on commitments of $50,000+ and is expected to raise $1,000,000 or more per year. The Director of Development will work closely with the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations to staff the School's dean, as well as the Dean's Advisory Council.

In consultation with the Associate Dean the Director of Development will develop and manage the annual development plan for the Carey Business School including setting goals, developing work plans, monitoring efforts and evaluating results; attend university wide development meetings and participate on task forces and committees including liaison with the University's foundation and corporate relations office; participate in the department's budget planning process and write and manage the production of special fundraising publications such as campaign case statements and brochures.

The Director of Development supervises three gift officers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • At least five years of development experience in higher education, including cultivation and solicitation of major gifts and supervisory management experience.


Strong management knowledge and skills, superb written and oral communications skills are essential. This position requires proven fundraising ability, knowledge of major prospect management, planned giving instruments and the ability to exercise independent judgment.

Masters degree and experience in higher education development.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
