The Office of Development (OOD) supports the goals and purposes of Stanford University. OOD staff members, working in concert with academic leadership and volunteers, strive to enhance, over the long-term, useful gift support to Stanford. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development in the Office of Development (OOD), the Associate Dean (AD) for Development is responsible for coordinating and/or directing all development activity for the independent academic units under the auspices of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research office. The AD directly oversees the six-member central VPDOR development team who have responsibility for development and volunteer management on behalf of the Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute (HAI); the Interdisciplinary Biosciences Institute (Bio-X); Chemistry, Engineering and Medicine for Human Health (ChEM-H); the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute; the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance; Stanford Data Science; the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences; and the Stanford Center on Longevity. The AD has dotted line reporting relationships with the development leads for the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, and the Stanford Humanities Center.

The AD works directly and regularly with the Vice Provost and Dean of Research (VPDOR) and with other members of the VPDOR's senior faculty and staff leadership team on policies, priorities, reporting, goal-setting, and communication related to development activities and results. The AD advises the VPDOR on all aspects of development and acts as the primary liaison between the VPDOR office and OOD, providing guidance on the formulation of fundraising priorities and specific gift objectives and helping to ensure that OOD and VPDOR policies and procedures are understood and followed. The AD may actively participate with the VPDOR and/or other faculty leaders in the cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors and volunteers.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Provide strategic advice and support to the VPDOR and senior faculty and staff leaders in the VPDOR's office and units.
  • Directly supervise a team of six, including three field fundraisers and three administrative staff. Hire, motivate, and guide professional development of team members. Set and manage performance goals. Inspire and provide leadership to ensure goals are achieved.
  • Optimize central VPDOR development team structure, balance assignments, set priorities, assess and advocate for resources as needed.
  • Oversee central VPDOR development program's annual operating budget.
  • Work with development leads for VPDOR units to set and track annual fundraising goals.
  • Coordinate development activity across the VPDOR units by leading regular fundraising strategies meetings throughout the year, guiding annual fundraising priorities review meetings with VDPOR faculty and staff leaders, and attending regular meetings with development leads and faculty leaders for VPDOR units.
  • Partner with the senior associate dean for finance and administration in the VDPOR office to oversee the fundraising approval process for newly identified fundraising needs.
  • Attend volunteer Advisory Council meetings for the VPDOR units and provide strategic guidance on agendas and volunteer engagement.
  • Serve as representative of VPDOR on OOD committees and councils as appropriate.
  • Ensure OOD and VPDOR policies and protocols are understood and adhered to.
  • May directly manage a small number of donor and volunteer relationships.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience and management experience, preferably in an educational institution or nonprofit or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience, sensitivity, and diplomacy
  • Excellent judgment, interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to lead and motivate others and earn the respect of associates at all levels.
  • Strategic skills to craft and help implement fundraising plans.
  • Demonstrated managerial talent in guiding major gifts efforts.
  • Customer service expertise serving faculty.
  • Proven ability to meet fundraising goals with a strong track record in managing and balancing donor and faculty relationships.
  • Ability to manage a large number of fundraising activities simultaneously.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective management experience and excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated experience recruiting, evaluating, mentoring, and placing staff.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and motivating groups of diverse individuals, including strong volunteer management skills.
