Overview

The Princeton University Art Museum seeks an exceptional Research Assistant for a position beginning in May for the remainder of the calendar year to assist with in-depth and exploratory research for an upcoming course.  They will report to the Curator of Photography and will work one to two days per week with the Curator to assist with in-depth and exploratory research on a forthcoming course, “Photography of Violence and the Violence of Photography,” dedicated to the historical and visual analysis of complex and disturbing images such as photographs of enslaved people and photographs of victims of the Holocaust.

The Museum’s main building is currently closed for the construction of a bold and welcoming new building, designed in partnership with Sir David Adjaye and slated to open in late 2024.

Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will work directly with the Peter C. Bunnell Curator of Photography approximately 10 hours per week to assist in the research for the forthcoming course, “Photography of Violence and the Violence of Photography,” dedicated to the historical and visual analysis of complex and disturbing images such as photographs of enslaved people and photographs of victims of the Holocaust.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a B.A. in Art History, with demonstrated research and communication skills. Knowledge of basic photographic techniques, historical developments in photography, a proven interest in art historical research, and a commitment to being a team player in an active office environment are vital. This post requires attention to detail as well as the ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information. An M.A. in art history or a related field are strongly preferred.
