Job Details

 

St. Norbert College, a nationally-ranked, private, Catholic, liberal arts college is seeking a part-time Prep Cook responsible for assisting the Department Supervisors and Chefs with the production of meals including preparation, cooking and clean-up/sanitation.

This position generally works three days a week, Monday - Friday from 6:30 am - 2:30 pm, but hours may vary.  This is a recurring 9 month position (off during the summer and academic breaks) working from mid- August to mid-May every year. 

Specific responsibilities include:

Prepare recipe menu items for meal plan, catering events and cash operations. - 60%

Work in a safe manner aware of personal safety and the safety of others. Adhere to all food safety regulatory guidelines and departmental procedures. - 15%

Clean and maintain sanitary conditions in the production work space. Clean and sanitize dishes.  - 10%

Assist Chefs and Supervisors in the preparation and production of recipe ingredients for the meal plan, catering operation and cash operations. - 10%

Attend daily staff huddles and staff in-services. This includes attending Allertrain,  Serve Safe, Emergency Action Plans, Departmental Updates, etc. - 5%

Ensure quality of food with batch production of standardized recipes and by monitoring eye appeal and freshness. - 5%

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education -

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience and Credentials -

  • Quantity cooking experience preferred.

  • 1-2 years of production work in an institutional setting is preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse campus environment or commitment to do so as an employee of St. Norbert College.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities -

  • Knowledge of state sanitation and safety guidelines.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers and customers, particularly in conflict situations.

  • Ability to interact politely and resolve customer service issues.

  • Ability to multitask, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments.

  • Skilled in basic math computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and decisions in an expeditious manner.

  • Skilled at setting a good example for others. 

  • Ability to concentrate and focus in a noisy environment.

Equipment Used -

Oven, grills, woks. induction burners, steam kettles, deep fryers, hot holding cabinets, choppers, blenders, slicers, knives, and other general cooking utensils.

Working Conditions -

Position generally able to complete tasks, however interruptions throughout the shift can be very frequent at times, depending on the needs of the department. Weekends or evenings are generally not required and the position is not expected to travel.

  • Position will need to stand and walk for most of the shift.  Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling up to 30 lbs occasionally.  Will need to perform kitchen actions such as bending, reaching, grasping, slicing, chopping, etc.
