Position Summary:

The Department of Journalism in the Grady College at the University of Georgia invites applications for the Knight Chair in Health and Medical Journalism, a tenured faculty position, at the rank of Associate or full Professor. We seek a health and medical journalist of national or international stature to direct and expand the professional master’s degree program currently in its 13th year of teaching students to cover health, medicine and the science behind them across emerging and established media markets, platforms and audiences.
The Knight Chair instructs, supervises and advises graduate students as they report and produce news stories for the College’s laboratory newsroom as well as for professional media organizations. An entrepreneurial sense of the possible and a willingness to experiment with new forms of news media storytelling to engage audiences around health, medical and related science topics are essential as we seek to deepen ties between the College and the profession. The chair will have the opportunity to create programs and collaborations with journalism organizations, internal University of Georgia programs (e.g., College of Public Health), external health and medical-related organizations (e.g., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and others (e.g., the Medical College of Georgia and the Morehouse School of Medicine). The chair also may periodically teach undergraduate courses related to health and medical journalism.

Additional Requirements:

Candidates for the rank of professor must document a successful career in evidence-based health and medical journalism and hold a terminal degree. Candidates for the rank of associate professor must document exceptional professional accomplishments in evidence-based health and medical journalism, hold a master’s degree and be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire. Candidates who have not been tenured at a prior institution must be approved for tenure on appointment by the Chancellor of the University System of Georgia.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

We seek an innovative, digital-savvy health and medical journalist with expertise in recognizing and reporting on current and emerging health, medical and related science topics, using basic reporting and interviewing, datasets and secondary information sources for story ideas and reporting, bringing diverse voices into coverage and using a broad range of media channels and platforms to deliver health and medical news stories (i.e., multimedia reporting). The candidate should be adept at using and teaching how to produce and disseminate health and medical stories using interactive, immersive and multi-platform media formats. Digital news gathering skills and the ability to teach the fundamentals of health and medical reporting and journalism, including the basics of data-based reporting, are essential.
