Your opportunity:

The UTM Career Centre utilizes a student-focused approach to help students develop career management skills that they can use throughout their life. Each teammember contributes, individually and collectively, via their specific role and by supporting others to meet the Centre's overall mission and goals. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, Career Development Unit, the Career Counsellor facilitates workshops, provides individual counselling support and consults with campus partners to provide tailored programming. The role assists in developing and updating career resources and participates in cross-functional teams within and external to the Career Centre to support the career development of students of recent graduates.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Applying self assessment exercises, vocational assessments, non-directive and other career counselling techniques
  • Screening for referrals and arranging appointments with other counselling services for students in distress
  • Developing content for instructional workshops
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Promoting programming, student needs and interests to employers and industry contacts
  • Editing content for brochures, newsletters, websites and/or handbooks
  • Conducting labour market research and analysis to support academic programming alignment decisions
  • Conducting a detailed analysis of student feedback and learning outcomes to inform program planning activities

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum one year of related experience in career counselling, preferably in a fast-paced post-secondary educational setting
  • Must have exceptional facilitation experience in order to effectively deliver presentations and workshops
  • Must have sound knowledge of the principles of counselling with demonstrated ability to support student success and personal development in the career exploration of labour market research, program selection for further education and employment
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the ability to research, learn, and utilize theoretical approaches and best-practices for career counselling
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite(.i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), student information systems, client management and appointment booking database systems, and video conference platforms
  • Must have strong interpersonal, counselling and written and verbal skills, in order to communicate effectively with a diverse student population
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Must be able to work well independently as well as part of a team, in order to foster an environment of trust, respect and collaboration
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and credibility with students, faculty, staff and senior administrators
  • Able to work well and remain calm under pressure


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Knowledge of crisis intervention theories and methods and the ability to safely and effectively refer and transition clients in crisis to appropriate support services
  • Knowledge of mental health issues with the ability to identify barriers to participate in the career counselling process
