18-May-2022 Close All Job SummaryThe University of Colorado Boulder Athletics Department is hiring a Student-Athlete Academic Support Services Intern! This position will support the Herbst Academic Center’s mission and vision while gaining the knowledge and experience necessary to advance their career as an academic support professional in athletics. The Student-Athlete Academic Support Services Intern will be responsible for mentoring a diverse population of student-athletes to assist in their academic transition to college, facilitating learning by supervising and maintaining an appropriate study hall work environment for at-risk students, and supporting the tutoring program. In addition, the Intern will have an opportunity to serve on Athletics Department committees, cross-train with different staff members within the Herbst Academic Center and become proficient in several student-athlete support software systems and NCAA continuing eligibility rules. This position is responsible for promoting the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program, including adhering to the principles of the Athletics Department’s Mission Statement, Diversity and Inclusion Mission Statement, Core Values, Policies and Procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the University, the Pac-12 Conference and the NCAA.

  • Provide intensive one-on-one assistance for at-risk students.
  • Empower students to fully engage in their academic life and promote the development of academic success.
  • Teach students about academic integrity and academic fraud.
  • Assist students in organizing their time and priorities.
  • Teach study skills/strategy development (note-taking, test-taking, reading comprehension, and time management), motivational techniques, and learning techniques to improve student-athlete's performance and achievement with learning challenges and foster autonomous learners.
  • Teach students how to build daily and weekly academic objectives that are specific and measurable.
  • Confirm student’s class attendance through note checking.
  • Hold students accountable to meeting times/dates, behavior expectations, and academic objectives.
  • Assist in the facilitation of tutor appointment requests.
  • Help with coordinating day-to-day operations of the Tutor.
  • Program by processing appointment changes and requests, assigning and supervising tutor sessions, resolving operations problems, and creating and delivering daily reports.
  • Create detailed reports following each individual session using the preferred method of reporting.
  • Confirm students are working on scheduled/required academic objectives and class assignments.
  • Collaborate as a member of the Herbst Academic Center staff.
  • Attend training, weekly staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform all work responsibilities and maintain confidentiality in all applicable policies, rules, regulations, and laws regarding NCAA, Pac-12, Athletics Department, University policies, and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Perform general administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.
What You Should Know
  • This is a 9-month temporary position.
  • This is a fully in-person position.
  • Position will average 40 hours per week, and hours will vary during peak times. Weekend and evening hours may be required throughout the duration of the internship.
  • Position will begin Monday, August 15 and end on Friday, May 12, excluding Fall Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break.
  • All University of Colorado Boulder employees are required to comply with the campus COVID-19 vaccine requirement.
    • New employees must provide proof of vaccination or receive a medical or religious exemption within 30 days of employment
What We Can Offer
  • Hourly compensation: $18.00.

What You Will Need
  • Candidates are expected to demonstrate academic integrity and confidentiality while following all University, Pac-12, and NCAA policies.
  • Highly motivated with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, outstanding organizational skills, and ability to handle competing priorities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Bring a developmental learning mentality to the staff, students, and themselves.
  • Practice cultural competence and professional maturity.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Advanced degree completed or in progress in Higher Education, Education, Counseling, Sport Management, or Business, or comparable field.
  • Experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or providing academic support services to student-athletes.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules pertaining to academics.
  • Understanding and experience working with and within the athletics environment, first-generation college students, non-first generation college students, underrepresented students, and students with education-impacting disabilities and academic preparation deficiencies.
