Job Details

A.T. Still University invites applications for an exempt Behavioral Health and Wellness Counselor on the Mesa, Arizona campus. This position reports to the Director of Behavioral Health & Wellness. The salary range is $65,000 - $75,000, based on qualifications and experience. Position may allow for telecommuting one to two days of the week depending on needs of the department. May vary depending on time of the year.

Job Purpose:
  • Provide individual, couple and group counseling for ATSU residential students and significant life partners.
  • Provide local and national counseling resources for off-campus ATSU students during their clinical rotations.
  • Provide stress management or stress reducing activities for students.
  • Provide information of university's Drug/Alcohol policy to students and refer students to a qualified Substance Abuse Counselor.
  • Develop programming in compliance with the Drug and Alcohol Prevention Program (DAAP) as required under federal law.
  • Promote mental health and wellness programs, activities, and resources.
  • Collaborate with the Still-Well student wellness program to develop mental health wellness programming. •
  • Promote counseling services.
  • Refer academically at-risk students to the Learning Advisors for academic support.
  • Maintain complete and accurate confidential counseling records and protect student's privacy as afforded by counseling confidentiality standards.
  • Advocate for student mental wellness.
Job Duties:
  • Provide mental health support/counseling to residential, on-campus/in-state, ATSU students/partners.
  • Provide mental health support/counseling to residential, on-campus/in-state ATSU students who are referred and/or mandated for academic or behavioral issues (i.e. promotion's board, at-risk committee, CARE team, dean's office, student affairs, etc.).
  • Refers students with substance abuse issues to treatment programs.
  • Provide information on obtaining community emergency mental health services.
  • Facilitate mental health Wellness Programs for the student body.
  • Provide mental health referral information to all A TSU students via print, in-person seminars, and electronic formats.
  • Assist students with reducing test anxiety and refer students to the Learning Advisors as needed.
  • Provide mental health referrals to local professionals as deemed necessary.
  • Provide regular metric reports on student use of services and programs.
  • Collaborate with the other Behavioral Health Wellness Counselors to mutually plan, assess, and implement goals, projects, resources and support programs.
  • Assist off-campus/out-of-state students with resources for mental health providers in their clinical training sites.
  • Guarantee 100% confidentiality of student/spouse counseling (exception where dictated by law or during threat of safety).
  • Maintain complete and accurate confidential clinical counseling records.
  • Participate on department/University committees as assigned.
  • Ensure students are aware of counseling services via a variety of interactions, publications, etc.
  • Attend student sponsored events as possible to promote visibility.
  • In collaboration with VP/AVP-SA and/or Director of Behavioral Health and Wellness, assist dismissed or withdrawn students in the exit process.
  • NOTE: The University employs BHWCs (on Kirksville, MO Campus and Mesa, AZ campus). Each counselor is assigned a specific duty by the Director of Behavioral Health & Wellness. These duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Responsible for developing, updating, and presenting presentations that meet compliance with the Drug and Alcohol Abuse Program (DAAPP) required by federal law.
    • Responsible for developing, updating, and presenting presentations that meet compliance with federal Title IX requirements for prevention of sexual violence.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Clinical mental health counseling/therapy, including individual, couple, group, and consultation.
  • Outreach: on-going outreach to students on emotional wellness topics through events, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Group counseling/programs/discussions on topics relative to student life as necessary based on student interest and need.
  • Provide programming on mental wellness for the student Still-Well program.
  • As a salaried employee, may work beyond 40 hrs./week, including evenings and weekends (as needed).
  • Independently licensed behavioral health provider in Arizona (required). California, license-eligible and/or willing to work towards licensure (preferred): LCSW, LPC, LMFT, PsyD/PhD.
  • Participate in approved professional development opportunities.
Skills/Requirements:
  • College plus Masters Degree in Counseling, Clinical Social Work or equivalent acceptable.
  • License or License eligible in Arizona (required) and California (license eligible/or willing to work towards licensure, preferred).
  • Clinical mental health knowledge and skills covering a full range of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, eating disorders, sexual/domestic violence, relationships, survivors, and LGBTQIA Community.
  • Demonstrated experience in Higher Education Student Affairs/Services (preferably in counseling, advising, mentoring, wellness).
  • Experienced in presenting psycho-educational information to groups of students/professionals (preferably in healthcare).
  • Experience or willingness to be trained in tele-mental health counseling.
  • Demonstrated experience/certification in evidence-based modalities.
  • Support wellness programming to include multi-dimensional perspective of wellness.
  • 2+ years’ experience with adult populations, including individual and couples counseling
  • Skilled communicator who is able to deliver clear, concise presentations and reports.
  • Lifelong learner.
  • Marketing and promotion of events and services.
