About the College/Unit/Department:

The Office of Research provides comprehensive research administration services to support the University’s growing research enterprise and houses a number of centers, institutes, core facilities, and other research initiatives. The University of Georgia Research Foundation (UGARF) manages the technology transfer function associated with University-developed intellectual property and is the named contracting party to sponsored project grants and contracts. The Legal Advisor to the Office of Research and Associate General Counsel to UGARF reports to the Senior Legal Advisor to the Office of Research and General Counsel to UGARF, and together these in-house attorneys provide legal support to all aspects of the research enterprise. This includes drafting and review of sponsored project grants and contracts, material transfer agreements, nondisclosure agreements, and data use agreements, as well as support for research compliance and intellectual property licensing activities. Other areas of responsibility include research policy development, and support for UGARF board of directors and other corporate governance activities.

Terminal degree required. Additional professional licensure and/or certification in the field may be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful applicant should have a J.D. degree from an accredited law school, strong academic credentials, and be admitted or immediately eligible for admission to practice law in the State of Georgia.At least 5 years of experience is strongly preferred, particularly experience in areas of law applicable to post-secondary education, research, and intellectual property.

Position Summary:

This position is a dual position as Legal Advisor to the Office of Research at the University of Georgia (UGA) and Associate General Counsel to the University of Georgia Research Foundation (UGARF). This position supports and reports to the Senior Legal Advisor to the Office of Research and General Counsel to UGARF. This team of two attorneys advises on legal and policy matters relating to the University’s research enterprise, including with respect to sponsored project activities, research compliance, technology transfer, and non-profit governance. Specific duties include drafting and reviewing research contracts and grants, confidentiality agreements, material transfer agreements, technology licenses, and other legal documents; conducting legal research and drafting memoranda; and providing advice to university administrators and faculty on matters related to intellectual property, conflicts of interest, and compliance with federal and state law and regulation relevant to the research enterprise. This position works closely with the Vice President for Research, the senior leadership team in the Office of Research, and the Office of Legal Affairs, which is the University’s central in-house legal counsel.
