The Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases (CTEGD) at the University of Georgia is one of the largest international centers of research focused on diseases of poverty. Researchers and students work together on some of the most important causes of human suffering around the world, including malaria, schistosomiasis, African sleeping sickness, Chagas disease, cryptosporidiosis, toxoplasmosis, leishmaniasis, and filariasis.

Position Summary:

The VEuPathDB.org Bioinformatics Resource Center is a large, multi-institutional project which is responsible for developing and providing scientific data-mining web sites used by tens of thousands of researchers to study infectious disease and public health impact worldwide.As a Systems Administrator, you will join a dynamic and growing team responsible for developing and providing scientific data-mining web sites used by tens of thousands of researchers to study infectious disease and public health impact worldwide. This position focuses on the maintenance, monitoring, and administration of the compute resources used by the project. This includes OS level software updates, configuration management and routine backups. Emphasis is placed on visibility, repeatability, and infrastructure as code practices.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Needed:- Solid Unix/Linux experience, and scripting knowledge (bash, python, perl, etc.)- Understanding of networking and firewall management and experience with server hardware and troubleshooting.- Familiarity with automation and configuration management tools (Puppet, ansible, chef, etc.)- Experience with monitoring, metric gathering and visualization tools (nagios, graphite, grafana, collectd, etc.)- Familiarity with containerization technologies (docker, docker-compose, podman, apptainer, etc.)Desired:- While this is not a DBA position, experience with Oracle would be a plus;- General knowledge of relational databases and SQL;- Experience with DNS and LDAP- Experience with Jenkins and/or groovy

This position will involve sitting/standing at a computer for the majority of the workday, and frequent Zoom meeting attendance is needed. Some travel is needed.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Provide Linux, MS Windows and Apple OS X system administration, and desktop, server and SAN hardware administration as necessary for the project. This includes: assist project staff at UGA with minor software and hardware issues (for office and laboratory desktop systems); for server-class machines used by the project at both UGA and Penn, provide support for ongoing maintenance of system health, including inspecting state with server logs and Nagios monitoring software. For these responsibilities the employee should use working knowledge of available reference materials (books, online resources) to complete tasks. Policy decisions should be based on industry best practices and best fit for project needs. Coordination with systems administrators in the data centers and UGA and Penn is expected.

Assist developing, debugging and maintaining system automation infrastructure using industry standard tools and custom software. This includes: using industry standard tools such as RedHat Kickstart, Puppet, Ansible, Vagrant, Git and Subversion, assist developing the necessary processes to automate the installation and configuration of operating system infrastructure per the project’s needs; for tools that are novel to the group, independently develop some infrastructure components from scratch, coordinating with senior project members when developing policies to intersect with existing ones.

Help maintain and improve documentation of system infrastructure on group wiki and other knowledge bases. This includes: using the group’s PhpWiki, Confluence, and Google Apps, help maintain and improve documentation of system infrastructure.; document work sufficiently for project peers to understand; correct (or suggest corrections to) documentation from other group members.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Monitor and test correct operation of backup systems, as well as review system log reports. This includes: using emailed log reports, verify that backup systems are operating correctly and on schedule; verify backups by restoring data quarterly; using emailed log reports, verify that systems are operating as expected; follow up on any issues raised in logs, including unauthorized access, hardware failures, and unexpected package installations.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Manage account provisioning, access, and removal for project members. This includes: using Puppet and manual methods, handle provisioning of all appropriate accounts for new project members, including unix accounts and appropriate access to internal systems (ldap, git, etc.); ensure that the appropriate access level is maintained for all systems, and handle adjusting access as appropriate; when project members leave, ensure access to all systems are removed.
